The Devil's Nest, Friday Night

It was an altogether calmer Lucifer at the piano tonight. Whatever restlessness had struck him earlier in the week ~~had been repressed~~ had vanished.

And so the mood of the music tonight was mellow, as he worked his way through some jazz and lounge classics, and took ample breaks for a drink.

Even Tiny seemed more mellow today, as if there was a strange case of localized mood in here. Or maybe that was just Lucifer's influence.

Leaning towards the Burt Bacharach tonight.

At the piano, or by the bar, where he's sipping some proper red wine tonight.

It was a very rough looking Jessica who appeared at Lucifer's piano when he was taken a break.

And yes, she was still going to drink despite the massive hangover.

"I may have to pace myself on Thursdays," she said in a low gravelly voice.

Lucifer looked up at her face, and-- huffed in deep amusement.

"Finally found the quantity of alcohol that can best you?"

"Yes. I came here after class when I was already drunk," Jessica said sipping her drink slowly. "So. It turns out it's a lot."

Caritas and the Devil's Nest totally made their profit margins yesterday.

Lucifer snorted. "Would you like some water and a painkiller to go along with that hair of the dog?"

"I'll power through it," Jessica said after clearing her throat. "Next drinking game will involve more skill than just finding an excuse to drink."

"If you insist," Lucifer said, paused, and added, "This is ending in beer pong, isn't it."

Duke went for the special for once, even as Tiny was already readying a glass of bourbon for him by the time he got to the bar.

Well, he'd have that one later.

He headed for the piano where Lucifer was playing, draping himself against the side of the instrument as usual.

"You're in a mellow mood tonight."

"Just resigning myself to the fact we're back on the island," Lucifer said, beaming up at him.

Or, you know, he'd finished repressing the issues he had hidden from Duke at the start of the week. One of those two.

"Cleared out the vacation hangover, have we?" Duke asked, lightly teasing. He leaned forward to give Lucifer a quick kiss. "We'll have to head back there soon. Make it a regular thing. Give you your required hit of Pacific."

That was definitely what Lucifer had been covering up. Missing the Pacific Ocean. Duke was telling himself that very firmly this week.

"I certainly wouldn't argue with you about that," Lucifer said, beaming at him-- and sliding his fingers into Duke's hair so he didn't retreat from that kiss too far. "Though on another note... isn't it your birthday soon?"

Because he was absolutely about to throw himself into making plans.

Duke swallowed a faint groan. He couldn't really put his finger on just why he was so excited to forget all about his birthday this year, but the reminders of it sent little bolts of dread through his stomach all the same.

"Guess so," he said, moving so he could sit on the edge of the piano bench and not be leaning over all the time. "Thirty-five, here I come."

Lucifer sighed, his hand dropping to Duke's shoulder - the far one, so his arm was looped around Duke's back. "You don't sound excited."

Duke shrugged, even as he unconsciously leaned into Lucifer's grip. "It's just not that big a deal," he said. "Last year I barely did anything at all."

Last year he'd been friends with Rey and they'd had a little let's-create-beach-yoga-birthday-traditions thing going on. Mostly as a way to distract him from mooning over Octavia being missing.

Lucifer let out a huff. "All right," he said, "So how about this year, we take two days and go to the Bahamas?"

"Any excuse to get out of here, huh?" Duke teased. "Let's see. What day of the week is it this time?"

At least two of the three of them would end up missing work with this plan. Not that that seemed to matter much around here.

"I don't know," Lucifer admitted. "Octavia didn't give me anything more specific than 'early June'."

Duke was faintly surprised she'd known even that much.

"June 2nd," he said, voice going a little lower as he remembered what else he'd done that day, last year. "She actually managed to leave me a present last year. She probably doesn't even remember."

"Mm," Lucifer hummed faintly. Acknowledging that. "Well, this year will be better."

Duke let out a soft snort. "It'd be hard for it to be worse."

"Don't tempt the island," Lucifer told him. "Either way, we're going to the Bahamas, Wednesday and Thursday that week. Let the sun take all of the birthday brood out of you."

While he bought a marina.
