"I don't know man," Duke said, shaking his head. "'Taco Thursday' just doesn't have the same ring to it as 'Taco Tuesday'."

"But you're not here on Tuesdays," Greg pointed out. "No one's ever here on a Tuesday. It's as if we cease to exist. . . ." He stared vaguely up into the fourth wall the corner of the kitchen where the walls met the ceiling. Duke chanced a glance, wondering if something was actually there.

There wasn't.

"Uh . . . huh," he said. "I'm just gonna . . . go do payroll."

"Don't mind him," Ali said. "He's taking a course on existentialism as the Y."

"I could go for a fish taco salad," Steve said, ambling in.

Duke nodded to him. "Grab a seat, then. Anything to go with it?"

Danny would probably say something like french fries or onion rings but Steve was trying to get back into shape. He grinned. "Iced tea?"

And Duke only gave him a little side-eye for not ordering a tasty side. “You got it.”

He put Steve’s order in, then favored the guy with a polite smile. “So. How’s your week going?”

"Is it a bad sign that the fish taco thing might be the highlight?" Steve asked.

"Well, I did have you walk the plank on Monday in class," Duke pointed out cheerfully. "So . . . maybe a little."

"Sorry that we've missed a few," Steve said apologetically. "The last few weeks have been nuts and I was out of state."

Duke shrugged. "I am the last person to get on anyone about missing school. Anyway, I know you guys are out saving the world from terrorists or whatever on the regular."

Steve chuckled. "Yeah, something like that. This time was two cartel leaders and an actual Nazi."

"Seriously?!" Duke shook his head. "Like . . . a really old guy, or one of those younger creeps who for some reason decided Hitler had great ideas?"

"Annie's world, so an actual Nazi with super-slow aging powers," Steve said. "Annie got to punch her!"

He was so proud.

"You really wish you could punch a Nazi too, huh."

"I really do," Steve admitted. "My grandfather went down on the Arizona. I think he'd approve."

Duke nodded. ". . . My granddad was killed by a friend of mine's earlier incarnation to stop him from killing her. He probably wouldn't care if I punched a Nazi or not."

Steve's face went through a series of contortions as he followed all of the pronouns in that sentence. "Well, maybe, but it's a pretty universal thing that's okay to do. Eat ice cream, punch Nazis, got to the beach. America."

Duke clicked his tongue. "Well. Cheers to that." He picked up a mug and saluted with it, then looked around for the coffee to pour himself a cup. "Crockers have never been all that patriotic, I guess."

Steve smiled. "McGarretts have been in the Navy for three generations."

"Quite the tradition, then," Duke said. He topped his coffee off with a belt from his flask and took a sip. "I know how that goes. My dad was a sailor like me. Best thing he passed down was a love of the water."

It wasn't a high bar, admittedly.

"I grew up right on the beach," Steve said, nodding. "I don't sleep as well without the sound of waves."

"Friend of mine and I spent a weekend in Colorado little while back," Duke said. "I don't think I slept a wink."
