More than one of the Troopers had called in today due to holes, so Liam was... a little shorthanded when it came to assigning people for patrols.

This was fine.

Steve was on the phone to his contacts in Naval Intelligence, trying to get ahold of some kind of sonar he could aim at the ground.

"I don't need to map the ocean floor, man, I just need something that goes more than 30 feet down."

He stopped talking to listen, even if his foot kept tapping against the tiles under his desk.

"Why's that in Guam?"

More listening, this time with an added pen smacking against the desk.

"Right, well, what's his number? That's classified? Why'd you even bring it up? Connect me to someone actually helpful."

Steve's patience was very, very thin right now.

Anakin jogged into the station because he could call but walking over was more dramatic.

"I heard from Rey," he announced. "In the hole. They're all together and fine, just bored out of their minds."

Some of the tension visibly left Liam's shoulders at that.

"That's good news." Well, not that they were all trapped, but that everyone was, you know, in one piece. If bored.

Bored was probably good, bored meant they weren't fighting for their lives against underground cave monsters or something at least.

"She also wants people to wear soft nonperishables so they get restocked if they get sucked down, too," Anakin added.

Liam's lips twitched a little at the phrasing.

"Sorry." He said to Anakin. "I know what you meant, and that's a good idea, actually, but I still had a mental image for a second there of the Troopers wearing armor made entirely out of bread."

Anakin burst out laughing. "We should definitely do that."

“They might get mauled by the ducks,” Liam pointed out.

Anakin, no. Also, this was why Troopers hated you back in the day, too.

Liam read that text message. Frowned. Sighed.

I just want you to STAY. SAFE.

Though at least now he had a vague idea that the people who'd been hole-napped weren't... falling through an endless void or stuck in an alternate dimension or something.

(He'd known they weren't dead. The Sight, fickle as it was, had been kind enough to let him see that much, when he'd stretched his senses to the limit the other day in an attempt to find out something, anything.)
