The Devil's Nest, Wednesday Evening

There were a couple of people taking measurements around the club tonight, too. One of them seemed particularly focused on the area around the door to Eric's office.

Octavia was not going to ask. She was behind the bar, back to her practice with mixing drinks and reading up on how to make the virgin versions taste closer to the real thing. And then about using pumpkin spice since it was the season again.

There weren't a lot of NPCs people around, and the sound system had decided Bauhaus was the way to go tonight. The Devil's Nest was open, and sort of chill in a goth kind of way.

Margo sure as shit wasn’t going back to Caritas after last week, at least not until she figured out what the fuck had happened there. But she was thirsty, and this tiny rock had more than one bar, so. . . there she was.

“I’ll have a glass of white wine from a bottle with a brand I recognize,” she said, approaching the bar. “Or at least something that says ‘chardonnay’.”

"Yeah, I was about to say," Octavia rasped, already turning towards where the wine bottles were after a quick glance at the woman, "that I won't know what you will or won't recognize. Chardonnay I can do, though."

“I used to be a civilized person living in a civilized party cottage,” Margo rasped, sounding dry as she looked the bartender up-and-down with her one eye. This one looked like the type who liked knocking sense into things more than talking to ‘em. “I know all the wines worth knowing.”

Occasionally slicing sense into things, too.

"Where you're from, probably," Octavia replied. Now where was the -- right, there it was. She yanked a bottle off the shelf, then turned again to hold it up where Margo could see. "This good?"

It was a mid-range chardonnay from a vintage that hadn't actually happened yet for Fandom.

“. . . y’know, normally I’d roll with the whole 2025 thing,” Margo said, squinting at the bottle with her one eye like it was planning to attack her. “But I just spent most of last week as a woo girl because someone decided to prank a bunch of us with magical liquor, so if you can find me something pre-2018, that’d be nice.”

Octavia shrugged and turned back to the shelves, in search of something that fit that criteria.

“Yeah, that’s why I decided to switch venues,” Margo said, with a wave of her hand she could only halfway see from her peripheral vision. “You don’t have any weird free shot deals here, right?”

“I think that may constitute a war crime,” Margo said, peering at him over the rim of her wine glass. “It’ll have to be a part of our new Fillorian constitution.”

His efforts to be Fillory's own take on France's Sun King had died practically on day one.

Margo brought her wine up to her mouth. She took a thoughtful sip.

“Well, Josh is there now,” she said. “If anyone can actually invent champagne, it’s him.”

"Octavia," Eliot greeted with a dignified nod. "I have been here an entire week now. Clearly I need a cocktail to celebrate. Or possibly commiserate. Either way, really."

Octavia's answering nod of greeting was less 'dignified' and more just 'bro'.

"Any requests, or do you just want to try your luck? I make no promises either way."

Eliot gave her a measuring look.

"You're meticulous," he decided. "If last week is anything to judge by, and I'm an extremely good judge of character." Was he, though? "We can start relatively simple. How about a pimm's cup?"

"P-I-M-M," Eliot said, with only a little bit of a an "I'm humoring you" edge. After all, he meant what he said about her being meticulous. And how was she meant to learn if no one would bother to teach her? "Using the liquor by the same name, with lime juice and some ginger ale. And a delightfully excessive number of garnishes."

Eliot leaned on the bar and watched, ready to offer helpful suggestions if it looked like she needed them.

But it really was a fairly simple cocktail. Didn't even need a shaker.
