Was Buck a little disappointed he hadn't had any visitors last weekend? Yes. Homesickness was a new experience for him. He had spent most of his adult life traveling and for the first time he actually missed the people he left behind.

There wasn't much work to distract him today, so he was basically sitting outside the station, enjoying the nice weather and doing the time zone math to see when it would be a good time to FaceTime Maddie and Jee-Yun.

Well, it was always a good idea to know the EMTs, right, especially when you got shot at all the time there were so many explosions in your canon cases sometimes overlapped, so Steve was wandering down to the fire station.

"Hello," he said with a wave. "I'm Steve McGarrett from the Trooper Station."

Buck doubted this town needed two cops, but it also didn't really need two firefighters, so who was he to judge?

"I'm Buck," he said, giving a wave in return. "Nice to meet you. I already met the other cop--Danny?"

He would be astounded to hear there were four officers in town.

Steve grinned. "He's my partner, yeah. There's a few more of us at the station, though."

All having epic "let's toss pencils into the ceiling" battles.

"Really?" he asked. "What do you do all day? Because I've already cleaned everything in here like six times, and there's only two of us."

"Have you met the Bee Lady yet?" Steve asked. "She's 80 percent of our non-invasion problems."

[firehousehimbo]

"Is she...covered in bees?" Wouldn't be the strangest thing he had seen, but still odd. "Like Candyman?"

"I've never actually checked," Steve admitted. "I send someone else and then make Danny do the paperwork."

Steve: living the dream.

"There could be a woman covered in bees out there and you haven't gone out to see it?" For shame, Steve. From one reckless idiot to another.

"Want to go now?" Steve asked, grinning.

[firehousehimbo]

"Uh, I would love to, but I can't ditch out on a shift my first two weeks here." Travis would probably frown upon that. "Wouldn't we need to go if she calls in an emergency?"

Just roll over to her house with everything they've got like a SWAT operation.

"Oh, definitely," Steve said. "I'll call you the next time she calls us and we can...take the rickshaws."

He looked a little embarrassed. "They have sirens, at least?"

"Better than nothing," Buck said with a shrug. "To be honest, I was wondering how we were going to drive our rig through the streets of this town without swiping some buildings by accident. Rickshaws make more sense."

But wouldn't hold the equipment needed for an actual fire. What a dilemma.

"Oh, you'll definitely swipe a building," Steve said with a rueful smile. "They can't corner for shit."

"That's why I plan on letting Travis drive," Buck said. "That way it's all on him. I'm just an innocent bystander in the passenger seat."

[grenadesandohana]

"As long as you aren't spending the entire time complaining about how he drives," Steve said with another smile. "That's what Danny did in our first rickshaw chase. And the second. And the third."

"Why so many rickshaw chases?" And how could he get in on it?

"Boredom, mostly," Steve had to admit. "But I had been apprehending a rogue raccoon thief for one of them."

Buck wondered how many raccoons there were here that someone could steal enough of them that the police would notice.

He'd understand eventually.

"Did you catch him?"

Steve looked even more embarrassed. "He could teleport or something," he said, "and we ended up crashing into the popcorn machine outside City Hall."

Buck laughed. "Okay, maybe your driving skills should be called into question."

[grenadesandohana]

Steve grinned. "My driving skills are the best the US Navy can provide and the popcorn machine has no business being there."

[firehousehimbo]

"There a whole lot of rickshaw driving in the Navy?" he asked.

[grenadesandohana]

"That's classified," Steve said oh-so-solemnly.

[firehousehimbo]

"Uh uh," he said. "My career in the Navy ended before it began, but now I'm rethinking it if that's something I get to say to people."

"You tried to go Navy?" Steve said, looking excited. "Everyone else around here is Army."

[firehousehimbo]

"Yeah, I tried to be a SEAL," he said. "Passed the physical part and then decided it wasn't for me."

Because someone was too softhearted to kill people, aww.

"It's a tough course to pass," Steve said, not without sympathy. "I almost rang the bell myself to tap out."

"You're a SEAL? Cool!" Now he was wondering even more about Steve choosing to work here.

[grenadesandohana]

Steve's smile widened. "Thanks. I'm in the reserves now."

[firehousehimbo]

"You have to be overqualified to be a cop in this town," he said.

[grenadesandohana]

"Maybe a little," Steve said, laughing. "I head up the Governor of Hawai'i's special task force back home in O'ahu. Danny and I go back and forth. What brought you here?"

[firehousehimbo]

"Change of scenery, mostly." And the trauma of that firefighter-specific serial killer. Normal things. "I love being a firefighter but before this I job hopped like crazy and loved it. This is kind making both sides happy at once."

[grenadesandohana]

"This place is never the same from week to week," Steve said.

[firehousehimbo]

"That's what Danny said," Buck replied with a grin. "Only he looked less excited about it."

[grenadesandohana]

"He also complains when I hit the popcorn machine," Steve said. "We have different ideas of fun."
