The good part about this morning was that nobody was hungover.

The bad part was that apparently the busboy had decided it was a perfect day to play chess. Using the squares of the floor. And gremlins.

Miguel was staying far back behind the counter in the event of sore losers. Or sore pieces. Or...look, just don't sit on that side of the diner, okay?

As Billy made his way around the island for the first time, one thing was immediately clear. This place was small. Which was a bit of a nice change from the constant noise and crowds of Cancun, but it also made it much harder (impossible really) to not be noticed or to disappear like he was used to doing.

He had planned on just finding a store somewhere to grab a few things then head back to the boat. But as he got near the diner the fact that it had been two days since he had had anything other can coffee and a few things that had not gotten lost or ruined in the storm couldn't be ignored.

And this was where that guy from earlier, Miguel wasn't it, said he worked so at least that was a perk.... not that Billy was all that keen on getting to know a lot of people here. He wasn't going to be around for long after all. But he needed food and so he walked in, eyeing the sign as he did.

"Gremlins? Do I even want to know?"

Miguel nodded toward the chess game, where a knight and a bishop were arguing. "Sometimes it's best not to ask. Just give them a wide berth and don't antagonize them. What can I get you?"

Billy eyed the gremlins for a moment, his hand starting to go instinctively to where his pistol usually was at his hip before he stopped and cursed silently, remember he had lost is somewhere in the storm. Well, Miguel didn't seem overly alarmed by them... but yeah, wide berth still sounded like a good idea.

"Let's go with the burger and milkshake special," he said, taking a seat, still eyeing the gremlins a bit.

"Burger and milkshake," Miguel agreed, writing it up and passing it through to the cook. "So how's the boat?"

"Still afloat. Got some definite wear and tear I'm gonna have to deal with before I get back on open waters."

Billy fell silent for a moment, trying to think of what to say next. Most of his interactions with people for the last few years had been mostly relegated to business offers and whatever random job he had been hired to do. Idle chitchat was not one of his strong points.

"Can't really help you there." Miguel shrugged. "We've got a guy in town who does handyman things, but no idea if he does boats. We've got some people who live on a boat and might know someone, but they're off somewhere right now. But hey, at least you don't have to worry about the pirates; apparently they were a bit cannon-happy. They left after summer classes."

"Pirates?" Billy asked, raising an eyebrow. "What, they were here for classes?" he asked, a slight laugh escaping as he imagined what kind of classes pirates would be attending.

"I think their captain was teaching one," Miguel answered. "We get all kinds here." He eyed the gremlin chess. "Some saner than others."

"Riiiiiight..." Billy said, glancing back at the gremlins. "Nothing contagious though? No epidemics or experiments gone awry?"

Cuz ya know, that had kinda been a thing he had gone through, and really wasn't too keen on a repeat of it any time soon- or ever.

"Well, those things," Miguel nodded at the gremlins, "have hallucinogenic venom, so don't get in their way. No epidemics as long as I've been here, which is...about five years now? Haven't heard of any before then, either.

"...Define 'experiments gone awry'."

"Ya know, like "oh this new experimental drug will cure cancer... oooopps it's turning everyone into crazed monsters... that kinda deal."

That was a very simplistic way to describe what the Umbrella Company had been doing but it got the idea across without having to get into details.

"Okay, then no," Miguel said. "I won't say we've never had things go weird, but nothing like that."

Just, you know, trying to cure himself of addiction and ending up part spider. Totally different!

"Weird," Billy said, his eyes shifting from Miguel to the gremlins and back to Miguel again "I can handle. Just no roaming hordes of killer mutants. Been there done that burned the t-shirt."

Miguel opened his mouth. Then he screwed up his face. "Well...not in a while, anyway. And not as a general rule. But I can't promise never."

"I'll take it" Billy said with a nod. "Better than what I had been dealing with before. And I shouldn't be here more than a week or two so, really, what could happen in a few weeks right?"

Oh Billy, you poor poor newbie.

"Yeah, so have you tried leaving yet?" Miguel asked.

"Not yet. Still tinkering with the motor," Billy said rubbing the back of his head. "Think I've just about got it fixed so hopefully just a couple more days and I can continue on my way."

Miguel gave him a thumbs up. "Let me know how that goes."

He had a suspicion.

"Will do" Billy said with a nod. "I've gotten her fixed up and repaired plenty of times. May take little longer with this place being so small and all, but shouldn't be too much of a problem."

Ah yes Billy, because that is the only thing you will have to deal with XD

"Yeah, there's always the mainland, or online. Wait, you're from a while back." Miguel pulled out his phone, unlocked it, and handed it over. "Welcome to your future. You'll want to get a new phone. Then you can use it to order whatever you need and have it delivered."

"Wait... this is a phone?" Billy asked as he held the tiny device and examined it, his large hands making the small thing look even smaller. "It looks like a toy. And.." Billy said glancing at Miguel then back to the phone. "This thing is also a computer? No way!"

"Phones are computers these days, yeah." Miguel just refrained from rolling his eyes. "Like I said, you'll want to get one. Get online, order whatever you need, though T&C seems to have most anything, too."
