After being covinced to turn down a potential job this weekend (for a couples' costume!), Rosa had a lot of work today reaping the benefits of the seeds she'd sown in lieu of said job refusal. It was a gamble, but she'd always liked a risky bet, and the client had played perfectly into her hand. It was pretty simple, really. She'd just recommended they went with this other detective that she knew would fuck it up and do a bad job, which, sure, meant that they would find Rosa unreliable for a bad recommendation and go elsewhere, but, as she suspected, that just made them more eager to work with her instead.

So she was actually pretty busy that day, once that email reached her inbox, laying out a plan and making a few contacts to get some work for them done this weekend instead.

She was still kind of bummed that this meant having missed out on doing investigative work at some big New York halloween party, but she had gotten to see Kitty as a small blue fuzzy monster by sticking around Fandom instead, plus potentially getting her own UMF suit out of it now too, so it kind of balanced itself out.

Miguel came down with his customary offering of coffee, and set it on Rosa's desk before plopping down in a chair and tapping at his phone.

"Job come through?"

"Job came through," Rosa confirmed, taking the coffee (and the break that went along with it) gratefully. "Hashing out few of the details now."

"Think you'll need my skills?" Miguel slid his phone over to her. "Also I found a place that does custom UMF."

"You know I'm just going to want just black, right?" Rosa checked, sipping the coffee after wrapping her hands around the warmth of the cup. "I could be talked into some grey or dark blue accents, though. Maybe.

"And it should be fine," she said. "It's mostly just undercover work, info gathering. Real hit the streets shit."

Miguel took his phone back. "Eh, boring but cheaper. Cat burglar chic it is. Can I at least get the shiny one?"

"You say boring," Rosa countered, "I say subtle. Which is kind of useful, in my line of work."

Unless it wasn't, in which case...well, loud and obvious was easier to pull off anyway.

She eyed him a little skeptically before also asking, "Are there any extra benefits to the shiny one? Other than being shiny?"

"There's benefits to me," Miguel noted. Shiny highlighted curves really nicely. He sighed. "Go halfway, get a leathery look instead of straight matte?"

That wasn't a twitch of a smile in the corner of Rosa's mouth when presented with the benefits, no. Just the lighting here, really.

"I do like leather," she allowed, surprising, surely, everyone.

Hey, Miguel knew his audience!

"So think of it like a really thin, yet bulletproof leather."

"Sold," said Rosa, as if it wasn't already a done deal, then quirked up her chin. "So what do you think? You think I should start putting this new gear on my listings, or let it be a surprise?"

She had already planned on it being a surprise when it started to reflect her asking prices, but, you know...

"Definitely a surprise," Miguel said. As if there was any question. "You can get a jump on someone who's not expecting it, and once that doesn't work, you can just let them think you're bulletproof."

"That almost makes me want to mess up on purpose," Rosa mused, her eyes drifting a little as she clearly pictured the scene and approved of what she saw in her mind's eye. "Just to see the look on their faces when that happens..."

A pause.

"Which means that shit better actually be bulletproof," she added, "or else I'm going to be pissed."

You better believe that, if she got shot when she wasn't supposed to, it didn't matter that she'd gotten shot, someone was going to hear about it.

"A bit more than kevlar, from what I've seen of that stuff," Miguel said. "You'll still feel the some of the impact, get bruised, but the bullet won't go through."

"Perfect," said Rosa, grinning <>far more than any mortal woman should at the prospect. "It'd be a shame to go through the trouble of getting shot and not having anything to show for it."

Priorities!

"You worry me," Miguel said, deadpan, as if he had any right to talk. "Oh, hey - they've got third gen UMF here! You can change the design by thinking at it." He entertained brief thoughts of that. "Yikes, if you've got about a year's salary to dump. Okay, plain black, satin finish, second gen it is."

Rosa quirked an eyebrow at that. She...could probably drop that and be fine, but was that really something she wanted to admit? She was still kind of saving up for that private island, after all.

So her eyes considered Miguel critially for a moment. "Which gen is yours?" she asked.

"Second," Miguel said. "Third used to be even more expensive, and it didn't make much sense to spend that much on a costume I only expected to wear once a year at most."

"I was going to say," said Rosa, glad she could at least still make this jab whichever way he answered, "you could potentially change it just by thinking at it, and you still went with those colors?"

The smile there was almost sweet.

"But yeah. Second works."

Probably shouldn't outclass him, anyway.

"Hey, black and red are classics!" Miguel protested, scowling in a way that was mostly put on. "Watch it, or I will get you pink."

He would not. Unless she asked for it.

"Could get you a pink one for the weekends it'll match your hair."
