It was a very good thing the island supplied tiny Buck with a helmet, because he was going to need it. After trying his best to climb the tallest tree he could find and falling out of it, he naturally found himself at the fire station.

Which meant it was time to try out the pole without any adult supervision whatsoever.

Waking up someplace without Jay around (or, you know, his parents) should’ve seemed a little weird to Will, but, you know, Jay was basically still a baby so it made sense that Mom and Dad would be with him and he’d be here on his own, cause he was a big kid who could take care of himself.

Of course, no baby brother to boss around meant he had to find someone to exert all that Big Brother energy on so… lucky you, Buck?

“Hey!” he frowned. “That’s not safe!”

"I know!" How else were you going to get parental affection if you weren't going to put your life in danger?

Mr. and Mrs. Buckley...had some issues.

"Coming down!"

“You know?” Will squawked, clearly outraged. “Then why’re you doing it?”

… He knew very well why, because it did look kinda fun actually.

The why was evident just from the happy yell Buck let out when he went down the fire pole. "It's awesome!"

“You need supervision,” Will muttered, half to himself.

“I should try it, then,” he decided. “Just to see if it’s not too dangerous.”

"Wanna borrow my helmet?" Buck asked.

“Yeah, okay,” Will nodded.

"Here," Buck said, unsnapping his helmet and handing it over to Will. "It'll keep your brains in if you fall."

“Thanks,” Will said solemnly as he took the helmet and fastened it on. he really meant it, too, because he needed his brains intact if he was gonna Make Something Of Himself someday (even if Dad didn’t approve).

"And don't let go until your feet hit the ground," Buck said. "And if you do let go, try not to land on your head."

Helpful, Buck.

“Yeah, okay,” Will nodded, not bothering to say that of course he wasn’t gonna do either of those things. Then he was clambering up and sliding down and despite his efforts to seem grown up there was definitely a delighted shriek that escaped his lips at some point and well-

He’d better stick around for a while yet. Just to make sure Buck didn’t get hurt, of course.

"I told you!" Well, he technically hadn't told Will anything, but still. He could tell he was right in this instance.

"Just wait until I figure out how that firehose works." Thankfully it was a little too complicated for Buck to figure out, otherwise one of them would have really ended up in the hospital.

Yeah, Will was just gonna give that hose a very skeptical look as he handed Buck his helmet back. “What else is around here? You got any food?”

The place he’d woken up had had a little kitchen, but there hadn’t been much of anything in said kitchen except for a couple bottles of juice in the fridge.

That helmet when right back on Buck's head. Maddie had taught him well.

"Ugh no, the place I was in this morning had nothing except for granola bars," Buck said, making a face. "That's old people food."

The juice in the fridge had absolutely not been juice when Will had gone to sleep last night, that’s for sure.

“We should find some,” he said decisively. “Not right right now, but soon. Cause it’s not good for you to skip meals.”

"Why not?" Buck asked. "Does your stomach start eating itself?"

“I don’t think so,” Will admitted. “But your head will hurt real bad and you’ll get dizzy- not the fun kind, the yucky kind.”

"How'd you know that?" Buck asked.

[doctorgingerspice]

Will shrugged, cheeks turning pink in embarrassment. "I just do."

The Halsteads got by, okay. They didn't always have a lot, but they were fine. Most of the time.

"Well there has to be food in here somewhere," Buck said. "Firefighters save people's lives, including hungry people."

Sometimes it was an emergency when he was really hungry, it made sense.

Logic checked out with Will, too. "That makes sense," he agreed.

"Maybe there's a vending machine!" Buck said. "I don't have any change but I bet I can stick my arm in there and get something on the bottom row."

Will nodded. "I think your arms are longerer than mine," he observed, eyeing Buck. "But I can smack the machine and maybe help make something loose."

"That is the best idea!" Surely it wouldn't end in a vending machine landing on a small child.

There were no flaws in this plan whatsoever. "Yeah!" Will did a little fistpump. "Let's go!"
