Fix & Clean-Tuesday Morning

So the weekend had been... interesting. The fallout from it all on Monday? Not so much.

Dwight was well aware of just how much he had changed since his youth, mentally and physically, and he paid the price for having 48 hours of sugar, boundless energy, almost no sleep, and childhood memories. A full day passed out in the apartment dealt with a lot of that. But as he finally pulled himself out of bed, got showered, and staggered downstairs into the workshop, there were still some things he was still mulling over (and likely would be for some time).

Being a kid again reminded him of what his childhood had been like, as much as he tried to not think about it too much. But that step back to his youth had opened the doors to a lot of memories.  Some good. Like the memories of going hunting with his dad, exploring the woods, and the handful of memories he had of the entire family being together. Some not so good.  Like memories of when his mother died, how abusive his father became afterwards, how the family splintered apart, and how he grew up longing for the day he could leave it all behind.

Thankfully the island had chosen an early time after his mother had died for him to relive. Before things had gotten too bad. But still, when looking back nearly 25 years into the past, age 9 to 12 is an easy jump to make... and Dwight's mind was full and a bit turbulent as he got the coffee started downstairs, opened the shop doors, and sat behind the counter.

Glancing at the oversized sword that lay on the workbench Dwight's lips curled into a slight smile remembering how he got it, or well the kid-friendly inflatable version at least. He would have to make sure he got in touch with Amaya and returned the blade to it's proper owner.

(Open post with SP disclaimer as usual!)

Amaya had her class that morning, sure, but after that? She was off to see a man about a longsword.

not dirty

"Well, well, well!" she proclaimed with an unabashed grin as she swung on into the shop later that morning. "If it isn't Dwight the Dauntless himself! How went the dragon slaying? You manage to get any of those goblins?"

Read a room? Amaya Blackstone? Never!

"Well," said Amaya, with a nod, her eyes following Dwight as he went over to the sword and feeling an unexpected rush of relief to see that it was there and back to its former shiny steel glory as she suspected/hoped it might, "you're an honest knight, I'll give you that much. Could've just claimed that, clearly, you put in the work, you don't exactly see any dragons or goblins running around, now, do you?"

And there was Miguel, strolling in to get his coffee like nothing was different.

"Morning, Dwight. Should I apologize for calling you stupid?"

"You did. Don't worry, I was a brat." Miguel poured two cups, started to drink his, then paused. "Wait, do you take things in yours?"

The corner of Amaya's mouth curled up a bit, because, zounds, did that sure make her very dedication intention of turning this into a potential sale that much easier! What could she say? She was a businesswoman, and when opportunity knocked, she liked to open the door!

And she was fond of taking opportunity and shoving it through the door when it was also just passing by, minding its own business, too.

"Oh, a blade like that?" asked Amaya, oh-so-casually, as if she didn't have this answer pretty much locked and loaded and ready to go. "These days, would probably run you right around handwavey price range up to and including maybe a soul. But I will remind you, negotiation just so happens to be one of my favorite words! And, if I'm not mistaken, I know of a certain someone who was recently commissioned to take on a rather considerable project over at my own shop that might be able to figure into the bargaining a bit...

"Besides," the grin grew a little wider, "you'd be doing me a favor, saving me from having to lug the blasted thing all the way back across the island!"

"Ohhhh," Amaya's doubtfully considering tone did not at all match the spark in her eyrs, "I think I might be able to make an exception in this case."

"Right." Miguel brought Dwight's over and slid it to him. "How's the bed coming, anyway? Don't imagine you got much done this weekend."
special_rabbit: (proud smile)

[personal profile] special_rabbit 2021-11-16 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Amaya made a prompt and firm ppffft sound of dismissal, throwing in a wave of her hand to match. "Barely even a thimblefull!" she assured him. "Trust me, compared to some of the times I've got kids poking around the shop, you were an angel. Hard worker, too, and that's something I'll always welcome. It can be quite a doozy, though, that weekend. I'm pretty sure it's the first time I actually got to skip on out of it, myself."

Now...Amaya didn't really know too much about...emotions, and things like that...in fact, this ignorance was a bit of a point of pride for her, but even she could now feel that shift in the overall mood of things, and, well, she wasn't sure quite how to navigate that sort of current.

"Erm," she said, eloquently. "Well...you know..." Her hand moved again, in a gesture as vague as the words themselves, "that's just the thing with the past, isn't it? It's in the past. And that's where it can stay. Erm, except when it doesn't. But now that's past, too!"

Brilliant work, Amaya. Top notch discourse, truly.

"So! About that sword! If you're going to keep it after all, what next? Nice display for the shop? Not to toot my own horn, but it's be a shame to just keep it packed up, if you ask me. Best keep it somewhere you can get to it quickly, too, round here, never know what might pop up, could actually come in real handy one day!"

"Sounds good," Miguel said. "You've got my number for the move and the break both."

The breath of relief that escaped Amaya as Dwight laughed and took the bait on the subject change was not subtle, and she took a moment to just appreciate the fact that she didn't need to pull out the whole 'good heavens look at the time!' bit whilst consulting a watch that she was definitely not wearing to get out of this one.

Like, yeah, yeah, yeah, being slingshotted back to childhood was obviously going to dig up all sorts of trauma that you thought was long gone and buried for everyone, right? Didn't mean you just had to go and leave them all out there on the surface like lawn ornaments! You put them right back under the dirt as far as you could get 'em where they belonged!

"In my expert opinion?" she asked, lifting her brows a moment as she took a gander around at the space. "Well, you've seen my shop; you know I'm a big fan of weapons on a wall. Good statement piece, functional decor! And you've got the added benefit of not even have to worry about mounting it too high to reach in pinch, as well!"

[personal profile] special_rabbit 2021-11-16 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
But see? See? No need to dredge anything up, you could just fill those holes right back up with work! Amaya did it all the time, and look how well-adjusted and capable of handling emotions she was!

....

Ahem.

But one emotion she had no issue with was pride, and so she gave a small smile and a stout nod in response. "Looking forward to seeing what you'll come up with," she said, "and maybe if it all works out, I'll know when to send the next person looking for a nice way to show off whatever piece they pick up."

"I don't get on road trips very often," Miguel said. "Just jump in and go sounds good."
