Mooby Land, Wednesday Afternoon

Another Wednesday afternoon meant another shooting lesson. And all told, it had gone pretty well. Will’s skills were clearly improving even after just the two lessons, though he knew he still had a long way to go.

Anyway. For something that involved mostly standing in one place, it sure did burn some calories, which was why Will had suggested getting something to eat after.

“I don’t think I’ve been to one of these places since I was in college,” Will admitted, eyeing the menu. Surprisingly, it hadn’t changed much.

"Well, definitely don't get the salads," Steve said with a laugh. "You can always join me on an evening run if this feels too indulgent."

“I might just,” Will mused. Teenage-Will had more or less survived on greasy, cheap food like this, but current-Will definitely couldn’t manage it more than once in a blue moon. “Join you, I mean. Not get a salad.”

The pre-made salads were visible behind the counter and they did… not look very appealing.

They were the very saddest of salads.

"This island needs a juice bar," Steve decided.

It probably did not, no.

"I run before dinner every night," Steve said, "and despite what Danny might tell you, it's not to get out of making dinner."

“That’s just a convenient side benefit?” Will guessed with a grin.

"Yep," Steve said, grinning back. "But if I'm grilling, I need to wait a bit before it heats up anyway, so...win/win."

“Naturally,” Will nodded solemnly.

“Myself, I thought coming from the city to a small town, I’d be facing a dearth of takeout options, and yet…”

"Have you ended up with Chinese for 15 yet?" Steve asked.

“I… have not,” Will said slowly. “I don’t think I even know fifteen people here, what would I do with that much food?”

"Oh, I think they do it as a way to make you meet people," Steve said.

Or McGarrett was getting Rogers' food orders.

“That is deeply weird,” Will said, shaking his head. “Why is a restaurant interested people meeting each other? Doesn’t giving away that much food eat into their profit margins? … Pun not intended.”

Steve laughed anyway because puns were hilarious, okay. "I have stopped asking questions to try to make sense of this place," he admitted. "We have a frequent flyer at the office who calls when her bees are upset."

"Her bees," Will echoed. "I honestly don't know whether I want that to be a euphemism or not."

A euphemism for what, he did not know.

"I'm kind of afraid to know," Steve admitted.

"Maybe it's best if that stays undefined," Will decided.

"I'm certainly not going to ask for follow up," Steve admitted, ordering his burger and fries.

"The kind of repeat customers I'm used to probably aren't too common in a place like this," Will shared, mulling over whether or not to get a milkshake with his own order and eventually deciding screw it, yes, his life was a mess, he deserved a goddamn milkshake with his greasy food.

Damn right you did, Will.

"Who do you see?" Steve asked.

[doctorgingerspice]

"Here? Well, there were a few folks who managed to injure themselves trying to take their Santa hats off the other day," Will didn't laugh, because he was a professional, but he was very much biting back a snicker. "Back home? Take your pick, you've got your drug seekers, your people just looking for a warm bed for a night, and, of course, the people who can't help but stick things in places they really shouldn't be sticking things."

"Oh, all of the accidents that aren't," Steve said, snickering.

“Exactly,” Will shook his head. “And half the time they’re so embarrassed and it’s like, I have to explain about a million times, I’m not here to judge, I’m here to make sure you don’t die.”

"I desperately hope that doesn't happen on the island," Steve said. "We get excited when someone new arrives. I can only imagine how fast 'inappropriate thing up their ass' would spread."

“Particularly with those gossip-mongering rodents,” Will said, shaking his head.

How was this place for real?

"At least you missed two different raccoon invasions," Steve said. "The first was a sentient art thief and the last batch dropped people into holes so deep they couldn't get back out."

Will just snorted derisively. “I’m used to that second thing, at least, though the holes have always been more metaphorical than literal.”

And, okay, he did always manage to get himself out of trouble eventually.

"These were very literal holes and I had to threaten a talking raccoon with a grenade to get things to happen," Steve said. "It was not a career highlight."
