Coping through Cuisine, Community Center, Monday evening

"Welcome everybody," Hannibal started. "I am Doctor Hannibal Lecter, and I'll be indulging both my psychiatric degree and my love of good food this term by teaching 'Coping through Cuisine'. We will be preparing and cooking food, eating, dining out, and indulging in a number of ways, as well as discussing how they can be useful as coping mechanisms.

"Today, I encourage you all to eat what I have brought," which was excellent coffee, tea, and thick hot chocolate, along with chocolate bergamot and lavender lemon scones, "and introduce yourselves. I would like to hear your name, what sorts of foods you're familiar with, your level of cooking knowledge, and any foods you have an allergy or restriction against eating."

He nodded at the first person to begin.

Eye the food!

Name, foods you're familiar with, level of cooking knowledge, food allergies or restrictions.

Kurt had been nervous about the new class but also excited, especially after having already spoken with Dr. Lecter yesterday at the picnic. So when it was his turn to speak, he cleared his throat, trying to keep the nervousness hidden.

"Hi, I'm Kurt Wagner. Obviously, one of the new guys here this semester" he said with a slight grin. Ummm, I'm from earth, or a version of earth I guess, so that's the kind of food I'm used to really. I am from Germany so that is the cuisine I know the best. But I do love spice and flavor and enjoy trying other types of food. I... admittedly, am not much of a cook and know only a few American dishes that I can make myself. Thankfully, no allergies or anything that I know of which is good, because I tend to eat a lot at times" he added with a sheepish grin.

He thought he might need to clarify that it was because of his mutant powers and not because he was like greedy or anything but didn't feel like getting into all that on the first day. He figured Dr. Lecter knew, and that was good enough for him right then.

"Welcome, Kurt." Hannibal nodded to him. "I hope you'll enjoy trying some new foods this term."

Liz was still rather drained from the weekend and a little pale but she thought this class would be a good way to have something to focus on in the evening.

“I…I’m Liz, Liz Sherman,” she said quietly, she was a bit nervous about being in a class run by her therapist, “I don’t actually have any cooking knowledge,” she admitted, cooking was something she just hadn’t learnt and then there was the whole being around fire to cook thing and then she hesitated, “it’s not a food allergy but um…I don’t like vanilla ice cream,” she eventually revealed, she didn’t want to admit that it was because it made her cry for no reason other than it made her feel normal so she left it at that for the time being.

Hannibal smiled at her. "Liz. No vanilla without other options," he promised. "I hope we'll be able to remedy some of the gaps in your knowledge."

And Hannibal was absolutely not going to bring up the therapy in public.

“Hey I’m Guillermo,” Guillermo said with an awkward wave so apparently that was something he was doing with introductions now, “uh Guillermo de la Cruz and I love food,” which given his size he supposed that might have been obvious, “uh…I also love cooking and baking, I’m Mexican and my mum taught me to cook, so I’m pretty good with Mexican cuisine but I like the challenge of trying new foods to cook,” he babbled a bit, “uh…also I don’t have any food allergies,”

"Welcome, Guillermo," Hannibal said, nodding to him. "That's good to know. I hope I'll get to teach you some new things in class."

“Hi I’m Josephine Jones, I go by Jo,” Jo said when it was her turn, “I’m from England, 1953 so I’m still getting used to a lot of different foods that I don’t really have back home…um I haven’t always had the best relationship with food,” she admitted, “and I don’t know how to cook,” which she knew she had told Dr. Lecter back at Thanksgiving, “but I don’t have any food allergies,” she told him.

"It's good to see you, Jo," Hannibal said. "There's quite a variety, and I look forward to introducing you to some new favorites."

Astrid had a soft smile and a nod as she looked around a moment before going into her own introduction. "I'm Astrid Magnussen," she offered, "no allergies or restrictions, but I do sometimes get a little funny about milk."

She didn't really need to mention that, but it was always one of her favorite quirks to just throw at people these days.

"I like to think of myself as pretty well-versed in a lot of different cuisines....around this planet, anyway, and I'm always interested to try new things. I've been cooking for myself ever since I was little, so I know my way around a kitchen pretty well. Not that great at it," she gave a small self-depricating sort of smile, "but no one's complained so far. I used to do the Monday morning breakfasts in the dorms after Wayne left, but that sort of faded out, unfortunately."

She ended with a small shrug. "I guess that's it."

"Welcome, Astrid." Hannibal smiled. "Does that mean I should ensure we have dairy-free options?"

Astrid shook her head. "It's just milk by itself," she clarified, with an almost apologetic smile, not for the hang-up itself, but for the fact that she'd imagine Dr. Lecter would find the reason for it interesting, but it was hardly anything to go into here, and she half-felt now that it was kind of stupid to even mention it. "I'm fine with in other things, though."

Hannibal was absolutely curious, but was disinclined to ask potentially embarrassing questions in public. "Noted. No milk on its own, then, without other options."

"Hey, I'm Dwight. I run the Fix & Clean shop here in town. As far as food experiences go, I do not have all the best relationship with cooking in general though last semester I did take the cooking class and managed to not burn the community center down, so figured I would keep going while I was on a roll and sign u for another one" he said with a grin. "I like most foods, especially anything fried or smothered in BBQ sauce." (what? He was a simple man who likes simple comfort foods.)

Hannibal shook his head at Dwight. "Hopefully I can convince you to branch out a bit this term," he said. "Although there is nothing wrong with frying or saucing foods."

He's here!

After the class was done Kurt waited till some of his classmates started filtering out before be approached the desk at the front of the room.

"Dr. Lecter," he started with a slightly awkward nod as he approached. "I... I just wanted to say thanks again for yesterday. For the warm welcome and the... the encouragement."

"You're quite welcome," Hannibal assured him. "I know what it's like to be the stranger in a new country," he confessed as if confiding a secret. "Even if for me it was France before America."

"Oh you are from France then?" Kurt asked with interest. "Was it difficult? Adapting I mean?" Kurt paused for a moment before continuing. "I... still find it hard at times, remembering things are different here than back home."

"Lithuania," Hannibal said. "I meant that I was new to France first, when I was a child. I didn't come to America until I was grown. Adapting is always a challenge, but you get better at it over time. After all, you had over a decade to learn how things are in Germany."

He smiled. "If you can get used to the measurement systems, you're halfway there."

"You actually get used it after a time?" Kurt said with a chuckle.

"Eventually," Hannibal said. "It may take a while."

Oh good; another class I can use to make myself hungry once a week.
