Coping through Cuisine, Community Center, Monday evening

Class met today at Portalocity, and Hannibal barely waited until they were all there to wave them through a portal.

They came out in a parking lot in a much warmer climate, and Hannibal took a moment to smile as he took off his heavy coat.

"We were going to be discussing cooking as a form of coping today," he noted, "but with the weather as it is, I thought we'd save that lesson for later in favor of eating somewhere else. When people move to a new place, particularly when they are refugees and cannot return home, cooking their own culture's food and serving it to each other is a good source of comfort. If the people in their new home area enjoy the food, that's often simply a bonus.

"That said, this restaurant," he nodded at the building, "has been here - that is, in Miami, Florida - for fifty years now, so it's a very appreciated bonus." He checked his watch. "And we have reservations. I've ordered the paella, so it should be ready for us; we can order whatever else you prefer from the menu. And we can enjoy the comfort of not being in the snow."

There's not much terribly interesting to the outside, but it's nice enough. Don't go near the street; the drivers will run you down.

The papaya milkshakes are to die for. Go with a sampler, or try the ceviche. Fried plantains are good, or you can wait for the paella. So many choices!

This California girl, at least, was appreciating the relocation, even if she'd technically been a Fandomite more in the past four years than anything else...which was actually a pretty long time in (mostly) one place for her.

Astrid was also happy to wait for the paella, though she did give the menu a cursory glance out of curiosity. She definitely could be convinced to try something else, too.

Kurt was equally glad for the warmer location. Just because one was covering in light fur didnt mean one enjoyed being cold. The paella sounded amazing but Kurt was also intrigued by several of the menu options he saw.

"Hey, Astrid" he said giving his big sis a grin. "Feel like splitting one of the Ajiaco soups? It sounds good" he said as he lowered his voice to a whisper "but I don't want to look like a greedy piggy in front of everyone."

After all, really only Dr. Lecter and a few of the others, including Astrid, so far really new much about him and his Mutant abilities and all- including the metabolism side effect that came with it.

"I'm pretty sure," said Astrid with a faint smile, "in the context of this class, a good splurge is definitely welcome," especially since that was, pretty much, what she and Dr. Lecter had discussed last week, "but, sure, I'll split one with you.

"How has your week been, Kurt?"

"It's been good. Classes are going well for the most part," Kurt said with a grin. "The dorm room is coming together nicely too so that's been a lot of fun too. How have things been with you? Oh, and I wanted to ask about buying some more of those postcards from you. Want to send a few back home."

"Things have been fine," Astrid answered, with a slight shrug of her shoulder, because, really, it kind of felt like she was just mostly treading water until summer at this point. "Some interesting flowers keep coming into the flower shop, but that's pretty much the most interesting thing lately. Around here, though, I'll gladly take that over the other option.

"And, yeah, definitely," she added. "I've got shoeboxes full of them, if you wanted to have a look through to see what you like, or I could always paint up new ones, if you've got something specific in mind. They really don't take long to make."

Liz was glad that she had this class as a distraction from everything that had happened on Saturday and she had decided to go with a sampler with the papaya milkshake as she opted to wait for the Paella.

"If you enjoy sweeter foods, you should try the fried plantains," Hannibal advised, moving them closer.

"Thank you," Liz said quietly as she reached over to try one, since she did enjoy sweeter foods every now and then.

"Are you having a good day so far?" Hannibal asked, more polite conversation than psychiatric inquiry.

“I …” Liz hesitated, “it’s better than it was on the weekend,” she didn’t know if Doctor Lecter listened to the radio or not and would know about the nightmares. She glanced down, still feeling guilty about how close she had come to hurting Prompto … if he hadn’t woken her up …

Guillermo had no problem waiting for the paella but he also decided to try the fried plantains and the papaya milkshake.

He really did love food.

"Are you enjoying yourself so far?" Hannibal asked.

Guillermo nodded enthusiastically, "absolutely," he grinned excitedly, "I haven't actually had much experience with Cuban food but so far this has been really excellent,"

"I considered taking us to Cuba," Hannibal confessed, "but not everybody here speaks Spanish, and this is after all meant to be comforting. Not to mention, Miami had better weather today.

"You could try the empanadas," he suggested, "see how they compare to the style you're used to."

“This is only the second time I’ve actually been outside New York,” Guillermo admitted, “I’ve never even left the country before or been on plane,” he told Doctor Lecter, “I definitely like the weather here,” he said with a grin, "but I'll try the empanadas though," he nodded, he enjoyed trying out different foods, even different variations of something he was used to.

Jo was happy to wait for the paella even though she had never tried Cuban cuisine before so she really had no idea what anything was but she was still curious to check out the menu and see what kind of food there was.

Hannibal smiled. "I don't imagine Cuban food was easy to find in post-war Britain. What sorts of food do you enjoy?"

Jo nodded, "I'm not really familiar with this kind of food," she told him, "I ...I do like a good feast, like a roast or even one with tinned foods and biscuits and chocolates like the kind we'd have at my old school sometimes," even though technically all that feast drama had been part of what had eventually led her to her expulsion but she still did like the food you could have at one.

"You might consider trying the Cuban-style pot roast, then," Hannibal said, pointing it out on the menu. "Something slightly familiar, but with different flavors. See if it's to your taste."

Jo read the description after Doctor Lecter had pointed it out, "that does look rather good," she told him with a nod as she looked back up at him, "I think I'd like to give it a try,"

Ask me about waiting two hours for the paella only for it to have been triple salted. (Hey, even classic places make mistakes when it's busy.)
