Guess who's back, back again?

That's right, folks, a mere two weeks after he was convinced that he was in fact leaving Fandom to go back home to Chicago, one William Halstead was back, and one of the first places he'd headed was the bakery.

To be fair, it had been several months from Will's perspective, not just two weeks, so he had actually been gone a significant amount of time, really. And there were some not-insignificant things that were accompanying his return: one, the adorable dog currently tied up just outside the bakery. And two... the fact that he looked like he'd been hit by a car.

(Because he absolutely had.)

But never mind that; he was back and he had a heart-shaped doughnut and a Wordle to figure out. Going back to 2019 had broken his winning streak, so now he had to start all over again.

“I’ve felt better,” Will admitted. “But, you know, I’m not dead, so I guess that counts for something, right?”

"Cheers to not being dead," Irene declared, giving him a little salute. She herself enjoyed not being dead just about every day, actually! "It's a low bar to clear, but one that we should all be proud to clear, all the same. I'm Irene, by the by."

She fairly sure she recognized him, the way you'd recognize someone you'd seen in a bar because your town only had two bars so you were probably going to see the same people.

“Will,” he replied. “Irene…” he mused. “You run the sex toy shop?” thanks, creepy squirrels, for that tidbit of information he probably wouldn’t have otherwise!

"My reputation precedes me!" Irene was absolutely delighted by this, of course. "And you're our doctor, aren't you?"

The 'physician, heal thyself,' was implied.

Doctors made absolutely terrible patients, Irene. It was known.

“I guess I am,” Will said, sounding a little surprised by that revelation. Somehow a temporary stop had become the possibility of something a little more long-term, and he was… kind of okay with that?

"Good to meet you, Dr. Will," Irene declared once she'd placed her order (and yes, fine, she'd gotten a damn doughnut.) "You must come to my party tomorrow."

A pause, just long enough for her smile to turn just this side of predatory, and she added, "I promise, it's a very low-key affair. You're beat up enough as it is."

Someday, maybe she'd get all her old trappings back out. But Fandom was certainly not ready for all of that.

Now why did that smile make him nervous?

"I- what?" he stammered, any insinuation she may have been making more or less going over his head.

What?

He was a good Catholic boy, after all.

Irene's very favorite person to torment-flirt had shown up at her house dressed as a priest. Lord help us all if she ever heard the words good Catholic boy.

"Nothing," she replied smoothly, in a tone that suggested it absolutely was not nothing, but she was generously letting it go. "But do come. There'll be drinks! And door prizes!"

Did you not want the opportunity to win something from Irene's store, Will??????

"I suppose getting out and being social is probably a good idea," Will mused. Even if, yes, the idea of what door prizes Irene would be offering had his cheeks turning just a bit red.
