It had felt like it had been a while since Liz had stopped by the bakery and since Prompto was going to be busy with the wedding and the road trip and couldn’t come visit her this weekend, she thought she’d try and spend sometime out of the apartment to keep her busy and distracted, even if she was already missing Prompto despite the fact that she had stayed with him last weekend.

She decided to order a mint chocolate cake and found a seat by the window where she was trying to not spend every few minutes looking at her phone in case there happened to be a message.

One week anniversary of being in Fandom was something to celebrate, right? Steven knew Marc would think it was silly to make a fuss but surely even he wouldn't object to cake?

Actually, come to think of it maybe not cake.

Steven looked at what was on offer to see what biscuits they had instead.

Liz looked up from her phone after checking it again when she heard someone come in to the bakery, she didn’t recognise the new person even though that wasn’t really hard since she had spent most of her time being busy with the store or being with Prompto so she hadn’t really met a lot of people.

“Good morning,” she said with a smile.

"Morning," Steven replied with a wave. Then, because it usually came up quickly, he added, "I'm Steven. It's my first week on the island."

“I’m Liz, it’s nice to meet you Steven,” Liz smiled, “I run the Photo Hut in town,” she explained, “how have you been finding Fandom so far?”

"Very nice," Steven said. "People are more friendly than I expected. Helpful too. Sorry, should I say 'people'? Still getting used to the vocabulary."

“Everyone’s pretty friendly here,” Liz nodded, “people is a good term to use,” she told him, she tinted her head curiously, “oh where did you live before Fandom?” she asked.

"London," Steven said. "In 2024. Things like people with super powers or talking animals, sort of, I already knew about. I mean we have them there. But vampires and the like are new for me. You?"

“My last job was based in New Jersey and it’s 2003 for me,” Liz explained “and I’m from a world where the paranormal exists but not everyone knows about it,” she paused, “i did go to school here though a very long time ago, I graduated in 2010 so I already knew what to expect with Fandom when I moved back in October,”

"Bit like that where I'm from as well," Steven said. "We've got like super heroes? But it's not common. You see them on the news sometimes but don't bump into them every day. You tell somebody you saw something extraordinary and they still might not believe you even if they've seen a flying woman on the telly. Came back? You must like it then."

“I did,” Liz nodded and hesitated briefly, “there was an incident back home and Fandom was the better alternative to my options at the time but I’m glad I did decide to move back,”

This was a new face, or at least a face that was new to Stark. He offered a small nod and a hesitant wave to Steven when he spotted him.

Steven waved back. "Hello. I'm Steven. It's my first week."

"I saw your name," Stark said with a nod. "In the squirrel's notes. I'm Stark. Hello."

Steven frowned, curious. "The Squirrel's notes? Who's the Squirrel? Is that a title or - ?"

[stykera]

"I read the notes for the radio on Wednesdays," Stark said, as if that really explained things. "Most Wednesdays. From the squirrels. Actual squirrels. Sometimes they have hats."

"Oh!" Steven looked happier now that he understood. "That's another one for the talking animals then. Honestly the island's a lot more than I expected. We heard it was a place for, ah, unusual people but a lot of details get left out, don't they?"

[stykera]

"There's a lot to tell. A lot to take in. It's usually better not to learn it all at once. It can be...overwhelming." Even for someone from somewhere deeply weird to begin with.

"And I think it may depend on what you mean by unusual people." Aliens weren't terribly unusual as far as Stark was concerned, for example.

"Well I mean people who've talked to gods, for example," Steven said. He pointed to himself to help make that clear. "Not the sort of thing you can chat about with someone on the bus in London, you know? Or at least not where I'm from."

"Never been to London," Stark said. "But talking to gods isn't common where I'm from either. At least not having them talk back. I knew someone who spoke with a god once. I haven't."

Lucifer was the closest he'd come to that.

It was likely going to be hot later in the day so there was certain to be some horrifyingly sugary iced coffee in Stark's future. For right now, despite the supply of cupcakes he had in his apartment, he was going to stop in the bakery for something that could serve as breakfast.

He nodded a hello to Liz when he walked in and went to examine the contents of the pastry case.

Liz actually managed to not look down at her phone for more than a few minutes.

She returned the nod of greeting when she saw Stark, “good morning,” she said.

"Good morning, Liz. Interesting messages?"

Or maybe cute cat pictures? Phones were useful for many things.

“Well I’m hoping for a message from Prompto,” Liz admitted, “he was leaving for a road trip today back on his world, I’m supposed to be meeting him when he gets to his destination,”

At least that was the plan, Liz had no idea just what was going to be in store for her.

"Oh." Stark nodded. "I...I hope you hear from him soon then."

“Thank you,” Liz said softly, “I would like to be there with him even though I know he’s very busy with his job and there’s a lot of political behind the scenes things happening,” she glanced down at her phone, “I guess I just have to be patient and wait a few more days,”
