Yesterday might have been the first July 4th in Buck's career where he didn't have to answer calls about grilling accidents or weird hot dog incidents. It was kind of disappointing, really. Maybe he'd get lucky and someone would have a hot dog incident today.

Until then, he'd be behind the reception desk messing around on his phone.

Did Eddie need to be as quiet as he could to come in just so he could smack his hand down on the reception desk at Buck? Not in the slightest. But what else are friends for?

"Jeez!" Buck nearly dropped his phone as he flailed out the noise. "Not cool!"

"It's not like there's anything else around to keep you on your toes," Eddie pointed out with a grin.

"Fair," Buck allowed. "Yesterday was the slowest July 4th I've ever had and I even played paintball."

"Is that a class?" Eddie shouldn't laugh, he was signed up for cooking classes.

"Hell yeah it is," Buck said with a grin. "And I won yesterday."

"Congrats," Eddie said, holding up a fist to bump for that. Because hell yeah, Buck. Kick their asses.

"Thanks," Buck said, returning the fist bump. "You should have signed up, we'd kick everyone's asses."

While having the normal amount of competitive spirit against each other. Wouldn't get out of hand at all.

"We would," Eddie agreed because they clearly wouldn't turn this into another treasure hunt situation at all. "Maybe next time. I'm taking that cupcake class at least, so expect cupcakes."

And have a garbage can ready for them.

"Is that a threat?" Buck asked.

Eddie flicked a paperclip at him. "No, it's not a threat."

It kind of was. But he didn't think so because Eddie just lived in denial.

Buck laughed, holding up his hand to avoid getting a paperclip to the face. "Oh man, do you think you're gonna have to use weird ingredients like on Cupcake Wars? Like green beans and stuff?"

"Maybe? I'm not sure." There was be smoked salmon and Eddie would have to take pictures to text Buck his confusion of it. "This is the first cooking class I've ever taken, so I kind of doubt it.

Clearly he didn't know much about this island.

"Oooh that would be great if it was a bunch of newbies," Buck said. "We might get a fire we have to put out."

"I'll keep you on standby," Eddie promised solemnly.

"I still can't believe we didn't get a single call about a grill fire," Buck said. "Or someone choking on a hot dog. Or a near-drowning."

"Or a really messed up use of one of those roman candles," Eddie added. Because that would have been their entire shift back in L.A. "Maybe this place is just smarter about those things?"

"Oh no way. People are stupid with fireworks everywhere," Buck said. "Maybe they go off island to mess with them."

"That's awful nice of them." Eddie, don't sound so disappointed to have no work.

"We should be happy no one is lighting stuff on fire." Buck wasn't happy about it, but he knew he should be. That kind of counted.

"We should," Eddie agreed readily.

But they weren't.

"But maybe just one, little fire?"

"A little fire would be good," he said. "No structural damage, no people hurt. Just...like a lit trashcan in a field. Where are all the delinquents in this town, isn't it a school?"

Kids these days. So lame.

"Apparently not pulling fire alarms or lighting cherry bombs in open fields."

Well, well, well, Edmundo. That was a suggestion.

"Maybe we can leave an anonymous note in the dorms asking for more youthful hijinks." Oh, that was responsible.

"Oh yeah, that's definitely not going to look like a trap."

"You think? It's not like we'd arrest them," Buck said. "It's those other guys who would arrest them."

Firefighters were the cool guys who didn't arrest people!

Who sometimes got drugged for being the cool guys!

"Yeah, but it's not like we can sign an anonymous note with 'don't worry, we're just firefighters' and stay anonymous."

"Maybe we can 21 Jump Street it." Oh yeah, like either of you buff, heavily tattooed dudes could pass as a teenager.

Hey, for a CW show, maybe.

"I feel like they'll know," Eddie said with a laugh. "Considering the town is as tiny as it is."

"Good point," Buck said, sighing. "Guess we'll have to keep getting paid to do nothing."

Oh no, anything but that.

They had the worst problems ever, it was true.

Eddie sighed and flicked another paperclip. "At least Chris likes the place."

"That's the important thing," Buck said with a nod. "And you did want a safer job..."

Didn't get much safer than this.

"Yeah..." Safer and boring and leaving him all alone with his own thoughts.

"We can always go to the bar after shift," Buck suggested. "That'll be fun."

Eddie took a deep breath and smiled, powering on through those pesky emotions. "That sounds good," he agreed. "We can have a few drinks and not look at the weird band."

Zombies. They were zombies.
