Trooper Station, Friday

Following Miss Smith's food class, Watts headed to the station. As per usual, there wasn't a lot to be done besides paperwork ("You there. My writing is atrocious. You fill it out, and bring it to me to sign," he instructed... one of the Troopers. Couldn't remember the name.), so there he was, sitting on the corner of his desk, flipping through a Portugese phrasebook.

"Meu postilhão foi atingido por um raio," he murmured to himself. "Well. Some things haven't changed, it seems." He couldn't help but recall the conversation he'd held with Jack, a lifetime ago it felt like now, where he'd suggested they sail to Portugal together. And for the first time in a long time, there was no aching emptiness as he did so.

Some things, on the other hand, certainly had changed.

It was a work in progress for Liz, she nodded slowly.

“I … I try,” she said quietly, “it’s … I do have someone else to look after now, it … that’s helping, giving me that focus, I didn’t think I’d be starting a family so soon, I thought Prompto would be here and we’d be married when it did happen,”

Even though she had come to terms with the fact that she would be having a child out of wedlock, the idea did still scare her at times.

And for Watts, who through the course of the conversation had in fact figured out that this Liz was Steven's friend Liz... well.

For one terrible, awful second he'd pictured Steven going down the same path Jack had done with Clara Cartwright. Only a second, though, because he knew very well it would never actually happen.

"Prompto," the name sounded familiar, if only through radio. "That's your, ah. Your beau?"

Liz had no idea what kind of thoughts were going through Watts' mind at that moment and she would have felt bad about that considering everything that had happened when Liz had allowed herself to get swept up in her emotions and had created … quite a big mess in the process.

She nodded, “Prompto had to go home to his world, his city was attacked and now he doesn’t know when he will be back … I … I haven’t been able to tell him that he’s going to be a father, I know … I’m not committing a sin, not being married at least not now … but I … everything I was taught when I was young, it’s taken along time to reach this point though,” she admitted.

"A difficult and frightening position to find yourself in nonetheless," Watts said, with what for him amounted to a great deal of sympathy.

Liz nodded slowly, staring down at that pretzel for a moment, which she still hadn’t eaten but she was starting to feel a bit hungry and she hadn’t eaten the cheese maggots in class since she was pretty sure that was definitely one of the things she couldn’t eat while she was pregnant. Actually she wasn’t sure she would eat it even if she wasn’t.

“I … I never thought something like this would happen,” she admitted as she looked back up, “I mean … at times I can barely look after myself, the idea of looking after a child … I - I know I have support here in Fandom though, that does help me,” she said softly.

He'd given custody of the pretzel over to you, Liz. Had even suggested you eat it! You might as well.

Though he was right there with you on that maggoty cheese.

"But you want this child?" he checked. It sounded like it, but he wanted to be sure.

Liz finally ended up eating the pretzel, which she wasn’t actually sure she had ever eaten before and maybe it was the pregnancy but it was one of the best things that she had eaten.

She was probably going to develop a craving for soft pretzels now.

 “I do want the baby,” she said quietly, once she had finished eating, since it was one of the few things that she was definitely sure about it, “I’m carrying Prompto’s daughter, I … I want to raise her, I - I just … I wish he could be here right now,” she said quietly.

If you asked Watts, pretzels were absolutely one of the best things one could eat. And he didn't have a pregnancy to blame that opinion on.

That she wanted this baby assuaged a worry in him that he hadn't even really acknowledged until he asked the question. After all, he knew what it was like to be a child and unwanted. It wasn't a fate he'd wish on anyone else, even the unborn child of someone he didn't really know.

"Then you'll do the best you can to do right by her," Watts said. He was... not good at sympathy, so didn't have much to offer in regards to Liz's wish that Prompto (it felt odd to refer to someone, particularly someone he'd never met, by their first name, but he didn't know Prompto's surname, so. Prompto it was. For now) were here.

"I hope that I can," Liz said quietly, "I - I'm just worried," she admitted, "that she'll have my powers, I don't want her to go through what I did ... I - I know that she won't have to go through everything I did - she'll have the support and training needed if she does but I ... there's so much I don't know about my own powers, what if she has them and ends up losing control like I did?"

"It's all well and good to have that concern," Watts said, because yeah, ignoring that possibility would be foolish. "But don't invite trouble either. You can't go into this expecting that to happen."

Liz bit her lip, nodding as she tried to stop one of the constant worries that she had about having children , “it’s … I’m trying to work through it in therapy, or at least one of the things I’m trying,” she admitted, “it’s - it’s a work in progress,”

"That's all any of us are, Miss Sherman. A work in progress."
