Devil's Nest | Thursday Evening

After yesterday's visit to Caritas, Annie was kind of looking forward to using her blender tonight. Not only did she love slushy-style drinks (an ambiguous term, for sure), but she tended to put things in blenders that were meant to go in blenders.

But alas, when she arrived at work, she found that all of the blenders had been removed from the bar this week. Something about maintenance.

(Something about bullshit, more like it, but Annie didn't feel like arguing with Tiny. Even if she did grumble a bit while putting up her specials.)

Further badass out-of-context Annie:

"Miss January," Watts greeted as he came in and found a seat by the bar. "It's been a while." Longer than he'd intended, but... life had been busy, these last few weeks.

"Mr. Watts." Annie was more than emotionally intelligent enough to pick up that if he wasn't going to take her up on her invitation to use her given name, she probably ought to follow suit there for his comfort level. "It has been a minute! Good to see you again!"

Off went the hat, placed... on top of an axe, probably, honestly, or somewhere equally incongruous.

And look, he didn't even correct her with a 'It's Detective, actually', since he was coming to appreciate the gesture inherent in the effort.

"Now, are you saying that genuinely, or are you saying that because you work in a drinking establishment and a certain amount of cheer is expected when greeting customers?" he asked.

"Two things," she pointed out, "can be true, you know. Also, there's some way less friendly bartenders who work here."

No shade, guys, but she was pretty sure the Thursday shift was the most...effusive? one.

"So it is genuinely good to see you, even if I'm also grateful for a customer," she added. "Especially 'cause my only real regular is off, like, on a nightmare bachelor party road trip or something."

Gladio was a different kind of regular than, say, her bestie or her fiancé who both turned up fairly frequently.

It had been a big drinking week for Shunsui...more so than it usually was, anyway, and more social, and, not one to pass up riding on the sheer momentum of something rather than trying to muster up the energy to go about things on his own power, he decided he'd best take advantage of the mood and keep the trend going. He had rather been meaning to grace this island's drinking establishments with his presence more often, anyway, and it was always nice when finally taking that initiative managed to land him on one side of a bar when a true vision was on the other side.

(No, not you, Tiny).

"Now, then ♥," he said, after a sweeping swanning of an entrance to eventually slide into a seat with a smile just as smooth, "which one of those tantalizing specials does the bartender recommend for a rather parched gentleman who tends to be partial to sake, mmm ♥?"

"Well, I'll take it, all the same," Watts decided. "And... one of those 'White Claws' of yours as well."

Oh, wow, look at all that drama. Annie did love an entrance.

She smiled over at Shunsui, leaning over to look at her specials with a thoughtful little tsk. "Have you ever had a mule before?" she offered, not really knowing what in the hell sake was like beyond the fact she was pretty sure you could drink it hot, which was a little weird. "It's vodka and lime juice with a little fizz? I'm not sure if it's much like sake, but they're fun."

And they came in a fun little cup!

"Oh wow, really?" That was kind of delightful, because it sure sounded like he was taking her recommendation, there! "Got a flavor preference? I've got pineapple, lime, raspberry, grapefruit, and...." She rummaged in the fridge, briefly. "One last mango!"

Annie was partial to the pineapple -- but as in most things involving flavor, Annie was not to be trusted.

And to think! This one hadn't even involved any cherry blossoms, either!

"I do feel," Shunsui mused, just as thoughtfully and his grin growing a little warmer at that response, "that fun is one of the most important elements to a good drink ♥."

And he did have a preference toward fun little cups.

"Let's do that. I'm sure you wouldn't steer me wrong ♥."

As Watts was soon to find out!

“Whatever your favourite is,” he said, waving a hand. Those weren’t the usual flavours he went for in an alcoholic beverage, so no preference on his end.

"I promise you, I would not," Annie said sincerely, even if other threads in this very post were about to prove that statement utterly false, and she moved to get the ingredients together. "And like, it comes in a novelty cup and who doesn't like novelty cups?"

Not like, a plastic refillable novelty cup or anything, but kind of a novelty all the same.

"That'd be the pineapple, but the mango is good too," Annie told him. (The mango actually was totally fine, in the opinion of this author.) "Want it over ice or like, straight from the can?"

Like an authentic modern person!

To be fair, Annie wasn't steering Shunsui wrong, so there was still quite the argument for truthfulness there.

"The vessel in which a drink is enjoyed," said the man who very often just took swigs from a jug, "only just adds to the fun ♥. And it shares something with sake in that respect, then, as well. Sake is always good, of course, but it is best in it's own little novelty cups ♥."

Several of which had suddenly appeared as if magic in Shunsui's hand as he gave it a little twirl in the air.

"Would you like to try for yourself ♥?" he offered. "A little drink for a drink, perhaps ♥?"

“… From a can?” Oh, yes, there was the judgey look.

Normally, you know, Annie did not really make a habit of accepting drinks that appeared out of thin air, from men she'd just met.

But that had been a pretty cool trick, you know?

"Sure," she decided, smiling as she placed the mule in front of Shunsui. "Tradesies. That's a really cool trick."

"So we're doing it in a glass, then," Annie decided, going to fetch one along with some ice. "But yeah. Some people prefer to drink stuff from the can."

Annie had a whole line of merchandise that actually supported this notion.

"Arigato ♥" said Shunsui, the crook of his smile letting it be known that he was well aware of that fact, though the duck of his head was nothing but grateful. "It does seem to be quite the crowd-pleaser ♥."

And as he spoke, of course, he'd gotten the ever-present jug from his side to pour the sake into two of the three cups perfectly balanced in his long, slender hands, and held them out over the bar for Annie to take her pick, one filled a little bit more than the other.

"And I do like to please ♥."

“I was not even aware that beverages came in cans,” Watts admitted.

She took the less-filled of the two -- it just seemed polite -- and lifted it in a little toast. "I mean, I can see why. I can make a blender go by just thinking about it," a tragedy that she couldn't demonstrate today, "but I can't actually produce booze out of thin air."

"They stay cold longer than bottles," Annie explained, pouring the White Claw over ice and even garnishing it with a cute little slice of pineapple. (Helpful, since it just looked like soda water on its own.) "And I think they're easier to dispose of, for recycling."

Oh, sure, Annie, just go lay a term like recycling on the poor guy.

“Recycling?” he could hazard a guess as to what the word meant, given his knowledge of the root word plus the context of the conversation. Still, a little clarification never hurt. “What do you mean by that?”
