The Devil's Nest, Wednesday Evening

The sound system was having a very specific kind of an eighties night, possibly in protest of the island's most recent stretch towards the future. Or maybe just because. It wasn't like there was much rhyme or reason to any of the other times it seemed to have a mind of its own, either.

Octavia was behind the bar, doing her best to focus even though her thoughts wanted to drift to --

Well.

All sorts of things, but mostly the weekend.

(Growing old was complicated. Especially when it seemed like it hadn't been.)

Steph was in a mood to do a lot of drinking and not a whole lot of talking about it, so as much as she liked the vibe at Caritas on Summer's usual nights... yeah, she was definitely not going to be there tonight. (Not that the vibe there was going to be its usual self, but see if she'd even noticed that.)

Tonight the Devil's Nest's whole... everything suited her mood a lot more. She slouched down into a seat at the bar before glancing up in the general direction of the speakers and giving an approving nod.

"Nice choice," she muttered.

Hey, if she was going to spend her evening listening to music way older than she was, at least it wasn't the poppy kind of eighties.

"It's doing that on its own," Octavia rasped, with her own glance up at the speakers. "So I'm not taking credit."

Even if she kind of approved.

"Why am I not surprised?" Steph shook her head, managing a wry half-smile for a moment. This fucking place, man. "It's got good taste at least."

She looked over the bottles behind the bar for a few seconds and decided that picking a drink was more effort than she felt like putting into this endeavor, then waved a hand as she sighed.

"Think I'll just go for a beer tonight. I don't even care which kind."

"You're a little late for last week's special." Yes, the special had been just 'beer'. No, Octavia would not elaborate to actually provide that context. "But yeah, coming right up."

"There was a special? Damn, now I have to pay regular beer prices for beer? Shocker," Steph said in a halfway decent impression of her usual lighthearted sarcasm. "Never would have anticipated that."

"No one took me up on it, anyway," Octavia replied in exactly her general deadpan drawl. She slid some generic beer in front of Steph. "Here you go."

Aw, it was kind of like the kind of beer that she used to drink while hanging out with Ryan and Gabe, and later Alex, despite the abundant selection of fine Colorado craft beers at the Black Lantern. That was nice.

"Thanks." Steph waved the glass vaguely in Octavia's direction before chugging about a third of it. "Guess that was a missed opportunity last week, then."

She probably could've used it then too. Oh well.

Octavia shrugged back at her. "There'll be others. Maybe." While she was probably the most likely out of all the bartenders here to put just 'beer' as a special, she was also not the most active about the specials board to begin with.

She was also starting to get the impression none of this was actually about discount beer at all.

Eh, maybe, maybe not. Either way Steph wasn't about to go into dumping on someone she barely knew, bartender or not.

"I mean... it's kind of refreshing, as specials go," she said with a huff that passed for amused, reaching for her drink to probably chug about half of what was left. "No complicated choices or pressure to try something weird just because it has a funky name.

No offense, Summer. It was just that 'drink until you can't feel feelings' was generally more efficient when it didn't get too fancy.
