Scott didn't really like to cut things this close as far as the portalling back and forth between here and San Francisco thing, but last night had been parent-teacher conferences for Cassie. And while she was, of course, doing great (and still trying to take her ant to school with her, despite parental protests all around), it had turned into dinner with Cassie and Maggie and Jim, and then a drink to discuss this whole ant thing after Cassie went to bed, and....

And anyway. The long and short of it was that Scott was a little tired today when he opened, between the red-eye portal and the many elementary school-aged friends Cassie had introduced him to and the two whole drinks he'd had (stupid body, stupid inability to metabolize alcohol anymore.)

And what that all really meant was that while Jeff got a nice slice of pumpkin cake roll, Scott had a giant coffee he was nursing behind the counter today.

"Hey, now. It was a group effort," Scott pointed out. "Take it out of everyone's pay."

Except him, since he'd been a freelance volunteer, thank you. And had also maybe caused some of the most obvious damage. (Wanda had pulled down all those cars, though.)

That had been neat/terrifying!

"I'd bring it up but I don't think they have my number right now. I'm kind of...hiding."

Badly, if you knew about Fandom at all, but he was trying.

Scott quirked a half-smile at him. "Seems like a decent place to hide," he noted. "My version of the FBI knows about this place, for what it's worth. But that might just be my parole officer. He's kind of weird."

Scott would not be surprised if his buddy Jimmy Woo hadn't shared with the rest of the class, considering that Fandom seemed pretty free of government agencies of either the initialism or clever-acronym sort.

Steve nodded. "Nick Fury sent me here when I'd first come out of the ice," he said, "for acclimation. He had me teaching 20th Century American history. I had to stay a week ahead of the kids."

"So if someone was determined and tapped him, they could track you down. But that's a fun crash course." Phrasing, Scott, Jesus. "What's your favorite thing you picked up from the time you missed?"

Weird question, but he was genuinely curious.

"Food that's not boiled," Steve said with a grin. "And a million movies to choose from."
