". . . Shit," Duke said as he walked into the diner's kitchen. "I totally forgot I was going to go fishing this morning."

Luke's was open. If maybe a little spacey today.

"Okay," Octavia said slowly, after entering and catching sight of the specials, "I know you didn't go fishing today, but canned stuff seems... new."

"Sometimes you just want something that's been steeping in brine for a year," Duke said with a shrug. "It's, uh. Not ideal, but it does in a pinch."

"Well," Octavia said. "Customers probably aren't going to mind."

[betterthanaplan]

"I feel like customers are used to weird shit from this place by now," Duke agreed. He reached for her hand. "And how are you doing today?"

[okteiviakom]

"Fine." What else? She gave his hand a squeeze. "The usual. Went into the preserve for a while."

[betterthanaplan]

"Oh yeah? I bet it's gorgeous out there right now."

They'd actually had a reasonable fall, so the leaves had a chance to change color before dying and falling to the ground!

"It is," Octavia confirmed with a faint curving of her lips that she couldn't hold back. "You should come see for yourself, sometime."

[betterthanaplan]

"Maybe I will," Duke said. "Maybe you should drag me along with you so I don't forget."

He was unfortunately pretty good at forgetting to do things right now.

"Well, I didn't say 'come' instead of 'go' for no reason..."

And not just because he seemed a little... distracted, these days.
