Community Center Class: Friday- Practical Woodworking for Beginners

So, after the last few handwaved classes (because life decided I needed to get stranded, need 4 new tires, and end up in the ER all in the last few weeks OMG) Dwight stood in his workshop and addressed the class.

"So with that first project of our hopefully done at this point, I thought it would be a good time to go over one of the important details of woodworking- choosing the type of wood to use."

Dwight paused as he looked at the class and then continued. "First, let’s start with the fact that there are many different types of trees that are used for lumber. They are generally categorized as softwoods and hardwoods."

Dwight handed out some papers with the next project options as he continued. "Softwood examples include pine, cedar, juniper, spruce, fir, redwood, and yew. Hardwood examples include oak, walnut, maple, ash, birch, cherry, beech, and mahogany. An easy way to remember whether a tree is a hardwood or softwood is to think about the leaves. Softwoods have needle-like leaves and are usually evergreen. Hardwood trees have broad leaves and will drop their leaves in the cooler months."

Standing back in front of the class, Dwight finished up with a nod to the stacks of wood that were placed on each workbench. "Pine is a very popular choice for beginning woodworking and building. Softwood, as the name suggests, is easier to cut and carve than hardwood varieties. As you improve your skills, and if you want to try something a little more challenging later on, you can try working with some other wood types. But for right now, we are going to be using pine and get started on our next project!"

"Eight out of ten lecture," Amaya offered, when all was said and done. "Delivery was a little wooden, but don't worry, I wasn't very board."

What?

Whaaaat? She had to! Besides, since Diaz had stopped showing up and it looked like Alara wasn't around, she had to do something to try and be slightly less awkward in this class.

"Aw, come on!" said Amaya. "That's all I get? Those were golden. And an eight is a pretty solid score, too."

More to the point? She'd tried, okay? But she was never not one to just hunker down and focus in on a project if that was what he'd rather. She could always use extra end tables.

Amaya didn't look too terribly convinced by that grin, but she'd still take it. "Got a real pair of characters this semester," she noted. "That's for sure. And I can now add 'bat pottery' to my resume, so that's something. But they're good kids. They usually are."

"And there's definitely plenty of that to go around," Amaya agreed with a nod. "Though with these two, the oddest things so far is a particular interest in vampires and just the fact that one of them actually comes from around the same parts I am. And I suppose that they haven't blown anything up yet."

Which was, of course, a good thing, but it still felt strange not having to worry so much about exploding students these days.

The look on Amaya's face at that comment went far, far beyond dubious.

"Dragons?" she allowed, because, hey, she was a kid who was very interested in dragons and still kind of was, really. "Probably not. But I've been twice bitten to be too shy about a healthy preference against vampires, at this point."

She couldn't really speak much on the matter of werewolves, though.

"Honestly," Amaya offered, after a moment of considering both options, "I think I'd rather take the sea monster. You can probably figure out how to take care of a sea monster pretty easily in the long run, but it seems like it'd be a whole lot more difficult to stay on top of unexpected Troubles showing up at probably the most inopportune time."
