The teens were talking about their Thanksgiving plans, and Eddie suddenly came to the realization that he'd be alone here next Friday. Maybe it won't be too busy. Maybe everyone would be passed out from their turkey comas and won't want to play pinball.

This week, Ulysses seemed to be in... higher spirits (ahem) than he usually was whenever he showed up.

Meaning, in part, that his smile in greeting wasn't half as self-conscious as it tended to get. "Hey, Eddie, what's up?"

"Hey, man," Eddie said, smiling at Ulysses with the sort of shamelessness that was typical of him. "Here for more appetizing bowling alley nachos?"

"You know what? I'm actually kinda famished." He would have to be, for what he was about to say next: "So I would actually love some, yeah."

"Oh, dude, I've been there," Eddie said knowingly. Because, come on, took a stoner know a stoner. "I'll give you some on the house."

Like he actually cared about making money here. He had just been handed this job by the Fandom gods.

That probably didn't deserve the kind of grin that it got, but here it was anyway.

"Thanks!" Ulysses said. "I mean, I'm guessing the like -- the economics of this place, or whatever, are pretty much the same as the movie theaters, but thanks. 'Preciate it."

"Not too many movie goers here?" he asked as he went to provide Ulysses with fake cheese and quite possibly stale tortilla chips.

He was from 1986, going to the movies whenever you could was like...the thing to do in high school.

"Nooot a ton, no," Ulysses replied with a slow shake of his head. "But it's like, fine, you know? I wanted a job where I wouldn't have to talk to people, and so far it's working out great."

"Now would a charming guy like you not want to talk to people?" Eddie talked to everybody. At great length. Whether they asked him to or not.

Oh, the grin was back at that 'charming'.

"Welll, you know, I just --" Yeah, the vague sweeping hand gesture would surely work to finish that sentence so he didn't have to. "Just not my thing, you know? Like, small talk, or like having to try solve anyone's problems, it's a no from me."

Yes, very charming.

"Actually, right before I got yanked back here from LA, I was just starting out working security, at night. Seemed more my speed."

"Man you're from LA and the island forces you to be here?" Eddie asked. "That's rough. Like, this island is heaven compared to Indiana."

"I'm not from LA, like, originally," Ulysses amended, finally remembering he had nachos to dig into. "But that's where I was, yeah. Although I was, like... having kind of a weird time?"

Shrug.

"I don't know. I'm stuck here now, anyway."

"Me too," he said. "I think. Never actually tried to leave."

Why would he? He was lord of an entire bowling alley!

"You also just called this heaven compared to -- Indiana, right?" Ulysses pointed out. (Gesturing with 100% more nachos, now.) "So I'm not surprised."

"Have you ever been to Indiana?" he asked. "Anything is better than that."

The Upside Down might, in fact, be better than Indiana.

"Indeed I have not."

A pause.

"Nor have I ever wanted to be in Indiana, so... I feel like I get your point."

"I, on the other hand, would love to visit California," Eddie said. "Especially when I was in a trailer in Indiana."

"It's actually not as good as I hoped," Ulysses admitted. "But still, probably waaay better than Indiana."

He really over-streched that 'way', there.

"Why was California a disappointment?" Eddie asked. "Feel free to crush my dreams."

Ulysses pointed at him like he'd just said a very clever thing. "That! That's what it does, it crushes your dreams!" he said, almost triumphantly. "You go there, thinking you're gonna make it big, and then you realize you're just another wannabe in a -- like in an ocean of wannabes, and you just get crushed by how pointless it all starts to feel."

Uh.

Maybe he should tone it down a little?

"I mean," he said, leaning back a little, shoving his free hand through his hair. "That was... my experience, anyway."

"Ah, that classic California tale." He had heard of people failing like that, but obviously never had the chance to fail himself. "That sucks, man. What were you trying to make it big in?"

The eye roll was a pretty big one for someone talking about something he'd spent several years pursuing, but:

"Acting." Sigh. "And, I know -- me and everyone else, right?"

"If I had gone it would have been for music," Eddie shared. "A metal band. In 1986."

So, yeah, he would have been fighting approximately 1000 other metal bands.

Ulysses squinted at him for a second, like he was doing complicated math in his head.

"... Yeah, no, just the hair alone would probably have made you get lost in the crowds."
