Luke's Diner, Saturday

Miguel came in this morning with a cooler, which had the staff interested, until they saw it was fish.

"The boss does that all the time," the dishwasher said, disappointed. "Is this even fresh?"

"It's salted," Miguel said. "I started it yesterday. And nobody says you have to eat it."

"I was going to make black-eyed peas," the cook offered.

Miguel shrugged. "Sure, if you want. Stack the odds."

"Hey," said Rosa, leaning on the counter, once the picnic reached its lame threshold and she decided to swing back around to the diner after taking the dog home. "You want to hit up Caritas tonight or something else?"

Should they/could they have figured that out prior to today? Probably. But sometimes you just had to live in the moment.

"Sure," Miguel said, sliding her a cup of coffee. "Caritas is good, unless you've got other plans." He personally couldn't be bothered to make any.

"Nah," said Rosa, shrugging as she caught that coffee and didn't even seem to think about it before going in for a sip. "Too much work. We'll save it for a cooler year than 2023."

"What defines a cool year?" Miguel asked. "If it gets to 2064, I demand a party that year," Miguel said.

Rosa thought about it for a moment, before squinting over coffee mug at Tightpants as if feeling like she would regret asking, but was going to do it anyway.

"What's so cool about 2064?"

"It's my birthday!" Miguel mimed a shot to the heart. "I'm crushed you don't remember."

Had he ever even told her the year he was born? He had no idea. It was the principle of the thing.

And here Rosa had been thinking it was just going to be some complete nerdy shit, like the exact number of protons to make something explode, so she had to snort.

"Yeah?" she asked, lifting a challenging brow. "And what year was I born, then?"

"Your age number of years before now," Miguel said. "I won't be rude enough to say how many that is."
