Bank holidays and the like took on very little meaning when one ostensibly worked only one day a week and managed her own business with a lackadaisical attitude that could certainly never support anyone, much less a woman of extravagant tastes and a dog -- but all the same, Irene had a sense that with the end of August was coming a long weekend.
If only because Irene, British or not, knew the American holiday-based rules about when it was still appropriate to wear white.
In any case, today found her idly poking through her phone for locales where that long weekend might be spent well. One could only indulge in so many local spa treatments, after all; a few days of sanctioned time off was an occasion calling for a trip to California, or maybe Martha's Vineyard.
