They didn't have Waffle House back in New Jersey, but Danny still felt at home with the no nonsense order style.

Also, he'd had a late night working on the Pepe Silva clue board. But the map was mostly flushed out with the news of an actual Walmart showing up overnight in the woods...

Well, it'd need to get checked out too. But so did many other spots that was kind of running the troopers a little thin.

So, he was working on a 'looking for volunteers' thing in the relative safety of the Waffle House. As you do.

Aphra had no intention of volunteering for anything. Unfortunately for her, she'd also fallen for the siren song of fried tubers covered in tasty stuff.

Yeah, but it was a slippery slope from tubers right on into breaking into a store.

Danny nodded at her over his coffee.

This was Aphra so it wasn't so much a slope as the flattest of planes.

She waved back at Danny. ""This is just like a caf they had near university," she said through a mouthful of has browns. "I mean they had nerf sausage instead of whatever this is."

"Pork byproduct," Danny suggested. Because he knew better than to expect anything high quality here. "I'm guessin' nerf isn't a toy gun for you?"

Or those would be some weird ass sausages.

“Hash browns,” Gonzo ordered. “Smothered, covered, and othered!”

The waiter didn’t even blink at this order. Though who knew what ‘othered’ would turn out to mean.

"Othered?" Odds were high on cigarette ash there.

“It rhymes,” Gonzo said, as though this were the most obvious thing in the world.

"...I can't even fault that," Danny admitted after a moment of sputtering.

"What what?" Rey asked.

Gonzo looked around, expecting to spy something weird.

“What where?”

"Sorry, with what?" she corrected because phones are stupid sometimes.

Rey would totally volunteer for stuff, but also she wanted pancakes. And to wave at Danny as she was seated. "How're you doing?"

Steve waved back because he was sitting there and it seemed polite. "We have an updated map!"

And it looked much saner than the raccoon map if you ignored all of the margin notes about Hello Fresh!

"Is it insane?" Rey asked, figuring that it was.

"We've started stacking the coffee shops," Steve admitted.

So yes. It was insane.

"Think I can get a salad here?" Steve asked, trying to slide into the booth and ending up just scooting because something he wasn't going to think about was causing him to stick.

"But they have it on the menu!"

"But do you want one from here?" Danny asked, jabbing a finger toward the kitchen.

Gray was here for waffles, not volunteering, but he gave Danny a nod of greeting right before his waffles hit the table and he rubbed his hands together in excitement and started pouring syrup over them.

A lot of syrup.

"That's a lot of syrup."

"I like sugar," Gray said, because, well, facts were facts, America.

Wait.

"You're the Steve who likes pizza, right?" Surely the other Steves also liked pizza, but work with him here. "You know Raiden's place is a Papa John's now?" The subtext being: whatever was happening must be stopped.

Rey had to smile at that reaction, because she got you, Gray. "They're that good."

She'd say that about most edible things, honestly.

"They're so good," Gray agreed, then admitted, "I kinda wanna try the hash browns but it sounds really complicated." Figuring out his order would be so much effort, and he didn't even have Raiden here to help him.

Belle was supposed to be at the library today but she was taking the opportunity to have breakfast first because she kept hearing about these waffles and she might need to be fortified in case the library had turned into something horrid.
