Steph's store had not been taken over by some soulless corporate entity, she felt it was important to note, and she'd personally go after any of those TV headed creeps if they even tried. (Were they actually the ones behind the town business swaps? She was kind of assuming here, but it given their incessant aggressive shilling it seemed likely.)

She did, however, have an infuriatingly high number of people coming in and being disappointed that she didn't have this one specific style of Chessex dice they'd seen at Barnes and Noble, or asking her for advice on how to buy PDFs of game sourcebooks online, and like... really? Really? Sure, the one person who wanted to know about getting a Humble Bundle of a bunch of sourcebooks got a pass, because it was for a good cause, but em>man, everybody else was getting on her nerves.

Even Saffron seemed to have her back on this, and was hissing more than usual at customers who came in with such inquiries.

From across the shop, granted, and usually an angle that kept her out of Steph's line of sight, but still.

Vi's bad vibes from Monday had only grown, but she wasn't going to let that stop her from the important things. "I got lunch."

Hash browns, obviously.

"I literally hate everything else this week, but I love you," Steph informed her, glowering at the back of the customer who'd just wandered away from the counter to go through the dice in the most desultory of fashions.

"You're just saying that because I come bearing fried potatoes," Vi teased, handing over a take-out tub. "I tried to remember what you liked. They had a lot of options."

Steph stared at the size of the tub and whistled softly. "Yeah, no kidding. Fine, it's not any of the diners we went to last week, but I guess the Waffle House can stay. The rest of this weirdness can fuck off, though."

"They haven't been causing you any trouble?" Vi asked, reaching for the cutlery they kept on hand and offering a set to Steph.

"What, the creepy-ass TV head people? Not more than being deeply annoying about getting me to sign up for shit," Steph assured her, making a point of brushing her fingers against Vi's as she took the cutlery from her. "But earlier I had someone in here asking me why my store is independent and not part of a chain, can you believe that shit?"

Impugning the indie merits of Steph's beloved store. The absolute nerve.

"I'm sure that went down well," Vi said dryly. "I wondered why my ears were burning earlier."

"Yeah." Steph dug into the container of hash browns a little bit like she was trying to stab them with her fork. "I hate this, everything's so tacky and corporate and gross."

"It's certainly... different," Vi said, voice dry as the desert. "In a bad way."

"I'm so fucking mad," Steph grumbled as she stabbed her fork viciously into her hash browns. "Can we not have this one place free of all that bullshit? Just one?"

"You might need a place free of people for that." Vi? Cynical? Never.

"Right?" It was almost like Steph wasn't the most optimistic about it either, judging by her bitter laugh. "It was better than most places here, at least."

"I mean, people seem to think it'll all be gone by the weekend," Vi said, poking at the hash browns with her own fork.

"Maybe," Steph said with a shrug, and held her forkful of hash browns out to Vi. "That's usually how these things go. Still doesn't mean I have to like it... I might actually lose some queer punk cred if I just let it slide."

"I don't think anyone's gonna accuse you of letting it slide," Vi said, leaning over to take the mouthful. "And if you do, I'll be happy to correct them."

Steph leaned over to kiss her on the forehead. "I know you would. Not like I really give a shit what people think of me anyway, but I would feel wrong if I decided not to care that this is bullshit."

"I love that about you," Vi said, smiling softly at her. "I know you're always talking about how I care, but you do too."

"As much as I tried not to for a while? Yeah." Steph returned the smile before settling back to have another bite of hash browns. "Besides, takes one to know one, right?"

"Right," Vi said, nudging their shoulders together. "So if you want to get angry I'll be right there with you."

Steph looked at her for a long moment, a forkful of hash browns halfway to her mouth and completely forgotten.

"I love you so fucking much."

"Right back at you," Vi said fiercely.
