The Devil's Nest, Wednesday Evening

It was a pretty normal night at the club this particular Wednesday evening, only with one crucial difference:

The AC wasn't working.

And so far, neither Octavia nor Tiny had managed to get it up and running properly again, nor had they managed to get anyone to come in and fix it. So now at least one of your bartenders was seriously considering abandoning ship mid-shift in favor of an actual ship. Though at least not before updating the specials board.

When Dean walked into the bar he was not expecting it to be that warm. "At least tell me the beer is cold?" Dean asked as he approached the bar carrying two items in his hands.

If he had expected it, Octavia would have had to assume he had something to do with it. And considering how much more done with everything she was getting with each passing minute, that would not have been a good time for anyone involved.

... Anyway.

"More or less," she drawled. "Probably."

"I'll have one of those then," Dean said, putting the two items on the bad and sliding the two items towards Octavia. "These are for you. A small thank you for the advice you gave me when I came to the island."

Octavia looked down at the drum sticks, and what appeared to be... a small edible arrangement of fruit cut like flowers. Her brow drew itself into a small, soft frown.

Then she looked back up at Dean again. She barely remembered what advice she'd given, but that didn't seem as important a question as, "How did you -- why these things?"

(Yes, she changed questions midway through. That was how you could tell she was a little taken aback. In case the actual facial expression wasn't enough of a clue.)

"Oh, I was here last night," Dean said with a shrug. "I asked Lucifer what to get you since I had zero clue. He mentioned you played the drums and were a fan of fresh fruit."

He then pointed at the drumsticks. "Those are the type my favorite drummer from Led Zeppelin would use. They should be able to take some punishment."

That was for the first thing, soft and short and quiet enough to be completely missable.

Less so on the other thing Octavia said, after giving the sticks another thoughtful look. "Why's he your favorite?"

"Glad to hear it. And you," Dean said raising a bottle of beer as a toast. "It's not the weirdest thing I've seen or heard of but I'm sure it wasn't fun. What broke it? Spell? Cursed item found and burned?"

"It'd be nice if it was that easy," Duke said, shaking his head. "Nah, troubles tend to be emotion-based. Like . . . the deep seated shit you don't want to acknowledge. This one was, uh, guilt."

Which for a guy who was only very recently started addressing his C-PTSD and martyr complex . . . was not an easy one to tackle.

Dean made a mental note never to visit Maine, because his shit packed down where he didn't acknowledge should stay there.

"So what broke you out of it?" he asked. "If you don't mind sharing."

Duke had conquered his latest trouble the night before. And he wasn't yet feeling too awful from the build up of the troubles still swarming inside him. So even with the aggressive heat in the bar, he was still smiling.

"See, that just sounds to me like you should be doing a special on frozen margaritas."

"I don't remember how to make margaritas," Octavia... well, complained was probably the best word for it. It wasn't directed at him, obviously. She was just so sweaty. "Frozen or otherwise."

"Ah." Duke nodded ruefully. "Yeah, that would make it hard." He tilted his head. "We should go for a swim when you're done. It's officially after Memorial Day, which means it's officially beach weather."

At least it made Octavia perk up a little. You know, by comparison, maybe not by a lot of other people's standards.

Yeah so it's currently so hot in Finland that the only place warmer in Europe is the south of Spain? And this country wasn't built for extended periods of heat like this, so residential buildings typically don't have any air conditioning?

Anyway this post is purely coincidental, as is the fact that I am typing this from within the cool embrace of the main city library.
