Pick Your Poison, Thursday

Adrian was refamiliarizing himself with the remaining stock in the store. Pam had clearly been going over everything with a fine-toothed comb and tossing out whatever didn't meet her standards for environmental-friendliness. He could only approve, continuing her work - though rather than tossing anything, he was making two separate piles for her to check over whenever she next came in: the ones he thought should be trashed, and the stuff he thought was worthy to be kept. Still, seemed only right that the final decision be hers.

"Good," Pam said absently.

She looked at that bath bomb.

"But that's the thing, isn't it?" she said. "The people who created that also convinced themselves they were acting responsibly. Or convinced themselves that they could convince someone else that they weren't mistreating the environment."

"Assuming they stopped to think about the environment at all," Adrian said. "I mean, the average person has no idea how much disposable plastic they go through in a day."

Wait, no, that was the start of a different rant.

"But, sorry, go on. You were saying?"

"Or how much bullshit plastic recycling really i--"

Cough.

"I mean. Yes. She may just be doing what she was taught, and doesn't realize she's doing harm."

"Less than nine percent--!"

Right, right. Focus. Do not get distracted. Even if there was a whole island of plastic twice the size of Texas--

Ahem. FOCUSING.

"Intention remains separate from consequence, even if it can certainly mitigate the response," Adrian pointed out. "Though if that's true, she may be more amenable to you pointing it out. Our conversation began fraught and stayed that way for awhile, and that doesn't make, mmm, fertile soil for seeds to grow."

"I'm not saying it excuses her," Pamela said. She'd certainly killed people for less. "But I just got here, and I'm trying to understand the situation before I make snap judgments. Or choose a strategy."

"When did I say you shouldn't do that?" Adrian said. "Again, why I suggested you go and talk to her, rather than saying anything myself. And why I just acknowledged that while I am probably not the best person to talk about this kind of stuff with her, she'll hopefully be amenable to conversations with someone else. I found much of our conversation frustrating and we clearly have different values, but that's me. I don't expect that to be the same for you."

Pam's mouth curved into a reflexive, wry smile. "You're the one who made this an argument, Adrian," she said. "I was just ruminating about why she might have done what she did."

She shook her head.

"It doesn't matter right now," she said. "I'll talk to her again. Maybe I can convince her to clean up her soil."

He raised an eyebrow. "Because I pointed out that even if that was how she was taught, it didn't adjust the consequences? That's not a--"

He sighed and shook his head. "It's not worth turning this into an argument either. Not when we can argue about what percent of this bath bomb is made up of pure glitter." He tossed it to her.

Pam caught it without a blink. The movement pushed her sleeve back, revealing a not-insignificant patch of fungus on her lower arm.

(She'd definitely have to shave again tonight.)

"And non-biodegradable glitter, at that."

"But the packaging swears it's eco-friendly!" Adrian gasped.

The shock. Just so much of it.

"A term that isn't conveniently broad at all."

Aw, she liked this one.
