The Perk, Wednesday Noon

You ever wake up feeling like everything around you was coming apart, and yet you were fine? Jesse wouldn't be able to tell you why, exactly, but that feeling had settled in the pit of her stomach, drenching her in unease.

Town Hall just made it worse, so by the time the morning was almost done with, she decided to head out. Here, to the Perk, with her foot tapping impatiently against the floor as she waited for her coffee to show up.

"Seriously," she muttered.

"And do you need all of it?"

"You don't need to need all the stuff in your home," Jesse retorted, looking at him. "It just needs to make you happy."

Bucky gave her a look back like he didn't know what she was talking about.

Sure, he was absolutely playing it up because this wasn't their first go-round with this conversation, but...

"You're impossible," Jesse told him.

She sounded way too amused to actually believe that.

Bucky shrugged with his good shoulder.

"Well, you're not the first to say that, so it might be true."

"One of these days I'm going to sneak into your apartment and paint a wall a fun color and maybe put some knickknacks down," Jesse replied. "And you'll finally see the light."

Oh, the deadpan was back. "Depends on the knickknacks."

No it didn't. Probably.

"I don't know, what kind of knickknacks do you like?"

[shapethecentury]

"I don't know," Bucky replied, his little shrug a little more thoughtful this time. "I told you what it was... before, right? Sort of... mementos."

Didn't work so great when a lot of your past was depressing Swiss cheese.

Jesse shrugged lightly. "Is there anything you like now?" she said. "It doesn't have to be 'like, like'. But I know you like some of the movies you play at the theater..."

"Can't really put a movie on your mantle."

He did not have a mantle, and also he was still kind of wrong about that.

"I mean, we could get you a poster or a Blu-Ray..."

Bucky looked sceptical. "A blue... ray?"

He had not been paying attention to the development of home media that much.

"Like a DVD?"

Much.

"DVDs are very fifteen years ago," Jesse told him, "But... yeah. Kinda."

Bucky shrugged. "They still sell those." Somewhere.

He thought.

He shrugged. "Anyway, you said posters? At least those don't need a player to work."

"There's a whole bunch of places that sell vintage movie posters," Jesse said, nodding. "If you've got some favorites, I can go find them."

"Dunno about favorites," Bucky replied, because... Well, did he have a solid enough grasp on anything to really have a favorite one? "But..."

He glanced past her, out the window. Maybe not really looking at the street, though.

"Hard to go wrong with anything Colbert. Or Stanwyck."

"I take it you don't mean Stephen Colbert," Jesse teased gently, taking in the look on his face - though it was also a question.

Maybe he looked a little wistful. Or at least, not entirely in the present moment.

Bucky gave his head the barest of shakes.

"Claudette."

Jesse gave him a nod, anyway. Maybe it was a little too serious.

"I'll look into it," she promised.

Bucky flicked his gaze back to her again. Just with the eyes, nothing else moved.

"It's not a big deal," he said. Something soft about it, though.

Jesse shrugged one shoulder. "Not to you, maybe," she said.

A little wry.

"Not to me," Bucky agreed, perhaps a little more obvious with the soft.

And just... watched her, for a moment.

Jesse fidgeted a little with her cup. It was almost empty. Probably cold.

Why is he looking at me like that?

She brought her cup up for a sip.

Oh, definitely cold. Eesh.

Sometimes she just... said things. That Bucky didn't really know what to do with. That made him want to watch her, like he was trying to figure out if she was real or not.

Just for a moment, and then that moment was over, and his gaze flicked to the cup instead.

"Coffee's probably gone cold," he said, gently wry.
