The beach, Sunday afternoon

Anakin and his new best friend, Thor, had spent most of yesterday in the junkyard on a pastry-and-sugar fuelled engineering binge (with breaks for fake sword fights because there were a lot of cool metal poles in the junkyard, too, all right).

Now it was time for the testing portion of their new podracer! They'd dragged their probable deathtrap pride and joy down to the beach, along with the engines to make it work.

"It'll work," Anakin was assuring Thor with a nod. "I'm very good at this stuff."

And so modest!

I really don't think this is a good idea...

"Of course it's a good idea!" Thor told Don. "Anakin is very good at this sort of thing!" And anyway, Don was imaginary. What did he know?

"I am!" Anakin said. "I'm the only human who even survives driving these!"

That was not the endorsement you thought it was, Anakin.

"See?" Thor asked his imaginary friend. "And I'm not human, so it's fine."

If everybody lives through this they're getting tetanus shots on Monday whether they need them or not, Don muttered, and told Anakin even though he knew he couldn't hear him, You're nine.

Thor told Anakin excitedly, "Don says we can go shooting on Monday for something called a 'tetanus.'" It sounded fun! "Now. What do I do?"

"Okay, you're gonna climb into the pod and put on this helmet," Anakin said, "because the dirt will blow in your eyes and it's not nice. And I'll start the engines!"

Foolproof plan. No notes.

What an excellent and flawless plan they had!

Thor jammed the helmet onto his head excitedly and clambered into the pod. "Let's fly!"

Father give me strength.

"It's gonna be great!" Anakin assured him, pelting across the sand towards the comically large engines they'd dragged out of the the junkyard and dropped down the stairs repeatedly on the way to the beach. They would definitely not work the first time.

"Is it working yet?!"

It was not.

"No," Anakin said, climbing up on top of it with a rock. "I'll fix it!"

"I have faith in you!" Thor called after him.

Everyone knows that beating on engines makes them work better!

Anakin narrowed his eyes in concentration, searching for the problem and then smacking the hell out of the twisted piece of metal that was in the wrong spot with a rock.

This is not how I want to find out what happens to me if you die.

"Huh?" Thor asked Don, confused--actually, hey, where had Don gone, anyway? (Back to the void where he didn't have to watch this unfold, was where.)

The engine Anakin was sitting on roared to life, which was great except that the other one was also not working yet. And Anakin was still sitting on the first engine.

Other than that, everything was good! The podracer was moving!

...it was moving entirely to the right, but that was probably fixable?
