FANDOM HOLIDAY FAIR, the Park, Wednesday

'Twas Christmas day, and the bears were setting up their stalls again for whomever might feel like wandering out for a dose of holiday spirit. There was the large open tent with its fuzzy cloth and its fairy lights strung everywhere.

There were the booths, of which one had sprung up near the frozen pond; some were familiar, some weren't. And the seating areas were open, of course, all crackling fire and soft downy pillow.

Silver and golden glitter continued to play in the air, like dust motes.

Arrive & Mingle

Polar bears are standing at the ready with hot chocolate to shove at anyone who comes into the tent. But there's probably other people, too.

They are very pretty, and made of wood and red fabric. Lights are everywhere.

Would you like some hot cocoa? Some non-alcoholic glögi? Or maybe something alcoholic, like mulled wine or a hot toddy? The polar bears are happy to serve you the beverage of your choice.

Mulled wine was definitely Jon's speed.

Look, it was Christmas, and he was alone, so it was either "bah humbug" the whole thing, or drink and wave at polar bears.

Booths - Pea Soup and Hotdogs

A new stand has appeared by the frozen pond. The cheerful polar bear - in a red and white Nordic Christmas hat - at the stand will serve you split pea soup or a warm and filling hotdog (vegan upon request) if you but ask.

Would you like some gingerbread cookies? Or some almond cookies? Maybe some amygdalota?

You can get cookies in all kinds of varieties here, from this sweet-looking red panda. Why is a red panda baking cookies? Why are you asking questions?

What are the holidays without a good fruitcake or a large piece of nougat, cut from the wheel by a Frenchman in a baret wielding a large cheese knife?

None of the items this very kind and very chatty magpie has for sale seem expensive, but they are very pretty and full of glittery stones set in cheap metals. And did you know spoons could be bent into earrings that way?

We didn't.

Booths - Lamps

This booth, manned by a woman you feel like you've seen at any and every fair you've been to in your entire life, mostly sells candles and cheapish lights. There are lights shaped like paper stars, and candle holders with an artistic print of the island on it. And little floating candle holders, shaped like a lotus flower.

Just lights and candles, all the way through.

Booths - Rugs and Mugs

Want a sheepskin rug (for which no actual sheep were killed)? Or a novelty mug with Santa on it? Maybe something labeled with your name? Or something woven and faintly Nordic?

Whatever you want, the grumpy-looking elf at the booth will get it for you. He'll even get you one of the creepy nutcrackers if you ask for it.

Do you know how to make a garland out of wrapping paper? Or make Christmas ornaments out of cupcake liners or toilet rolls? How about making cute figurines out of pom poms?

Rent some skates or bring your own, and venture onto the pond for some Christmas skating! Glitter snow included.

It's like this raccoon knows what you've all wanted all this time...

There's five elves on the shelf at the back of this booth. You get five little balls to throw at them. Knock more than three elves off the shelf and you win a polar bear plushie!

Or just grab a comfy seat by the fire. Maybe make s'mores, or heat up your mug of cocoa anew.

If you want to know how high strung I am this week, I called in for an (extremely expensive) emergency medical consult for one of my chickens this morning because I thought she had water belly. Then had to call them back ten minutes later and explain to them that actually she'd needed to lay an egg and that's what I'd been feeling.
