J,GoB, Thursday Late Afternoon

As part of her determination to canvas all of the island's dining establishments, Lydia had sent out a message to the Supper Club regulars letting them know they would be meeting this week at the bakery, perhaps a bit earlier than usual as it closed before traditional supper hours. So it was more of Afternoon Treat Club this week, although there might be enough savory options in the cases for one to cobble together an evening meal, if they liked.

Or one could just eat cake for dinner. That was their choice.

Perhaps try to decide which pastry you'd like.

Rey was more of a Perk girl, but she also wasn't one to turn down a bear claw, either. Or a danish. Maybe a croissant but only if it was a chocolate one.

If anyone asked, she totally had a salad before this.

Totally a salad! Very healthful and all that! "Miss Skywalker!" Lydia said in greeting. "Has anything caught your eye yet? I think a lemon bar might be calling my name."

"Everything has caught my eye. It's a problem," Rey laughed. "And now a lemon bar sounds good, too."

"It's the season for citrus," Lydia explained, "and it was ever so rare a treat back home...but I believe we may have discussed this a few weeks ago when we had ice cream?" She couldn't quite remember. Her memory was not her strong suit, alas.

"We did ~~at least I think. Handwavy handeavy~~. "I think you should get as much citrus as you want. Maybe even bring one home."

Well, Ignis certainly hoped no one was going to spoil their appetite for a proper meal after this, but he was making an effort to ensure that his face didn't say it quite so loudly.

He was probably mostly failing, but maybe he'd get distracted with some sweets soon enough.

"Do you have any preferences?" Rey asked him.

Remember, everyone: salad.

You know what would be just as, if not even easier, than getting everyone in on a collective lie, Rey? Just eating the dawned salad.

"You know, I've never really been much for sweets," Ignis admitted, surely shocking everyone. "And even when I do, I tend to lean toward tarts."

Ah, culinary humor. Yes, Ignis, hilarious, you were very clever.

"I like things that lend themselves well to being enhanced by other flavors: a part with fruit, a nice chiffon cake, perhaps a bit of cheesecake dressed up just so..."

There was a beat.

"And, of course," he had to add, "anything with coffee..."

Oh, he would definitely need coffee.

"And yourself, Miss Skywalker? Do you have a sweet tooth yourself?"

She was really going to have to just eat healthy on Thursdays.

Rey tilted her hand in a so-so gesture. "I love things like this, but it can get to be too sweet for me. That doesn't mean I don't love it until then," she said. "Is there anything here that has that... flavor-enhancement?"

Several other days besides Thursdays certainly wouldn't hurt, either.

"Oh, I would imagine so," said Ignis, since he couldn't exactly see for himself. "It wouldn't be much of a bakery if they didn't. I admit, I usually only get things from here when I find myself too short on time to whip something up for myself, but they've yet to disappoint. Anything that pairs well with some sort of fruit element, that's what I'm most likely to go for."

"They definitely have those. I kept looking at the cherry danish," she admitted. "It's not fruit but they have a good spinach puff..."

Now that seemed to catch Ignis' attention, head shifting slightly with a finger at his chin. "Now, I do rather enjoy a good savory pastry more often than not," he noted. "Especially since I'm always looking to expand my repertoire of recipehs in that regard..."

Bite-sized morsels he could include as a lunch were a necessity these days, after all.

"Though a cherry danish sounds excellent, as well. Is cherry generally a fruit flavor you enjoy?"

"I like all flavors," Rey admitted. "If it's food, I like it."

Not jello with food in it. There were limits.

Well, that was still technically food, although Ignis would certainly be loathed to admit that himself.

"Even beans?" he asked, with the faint twitch of a grin that seemed to recognize that no one in this establishment right now could even being to understand what he found so amusing about that question.

"Sure. Would that be bad?"she asked.

"I just that I used to know someone," Ignis explained, "who was very much not the same, and was a very particularly picky eater, and he made sure everyone knew about it, too, especially when it came to beans. Thanks to him, I always find it especially welcome to hear that someone is very open and willing to try..."

There seemed to be a pause, as he considered who was, in fact, a mutual friend of theirs.

"...most things, when it comes to food," he concluded.

"I can't really wrap my head around being picky," Rey admitted. "Food's amazing."

And sometimes you don't have it for a decade!

"I think there's only one thing I haven't liked and it was a drink."

Yes, indeed. But, wouldn't you know it, the person Ignis was referring to had the convenience of spending that sort of decade trapped in a crystal!

He smiled a little in agreement for the assessment of the wonder of food, and then tilted his head curiously. "Well, now I have to ask," he said, smile warming a little with with a gesture of his hand, "what was that drink?"

She made a face just remembering it. "Off brand Dr. Pepper. It tasted like spicy chemicals."

Some of these pastries had fruit, Ignis. That made them healthy.

Just ignore all the sugar.

"Mr. Scientia," Lydia greeted him. "Do you have a pastry you're particularly fond of, sir?"

Ignis will not ignore the sugar, thank you.

"Miss Bennet," he greeted her back with a nod. "I'm a bit partial to chiffon cakes and tarts, myself, something a bit on the lighter side rather than a richer, more decadent dessert, although I do say, it does rather depend on the occasion. And yourself? What have you found yourself particularly delighted by when looking for a treat?"

Treat certainly was the operative, subtly emphasized word.

Lydia loved a little treat! Whether it was a ribbon or a sweet, sign her up!

"As I was telling Miss Skywalker earlier, I find myself a bit partial to citrus these days," Lydia confessed. "It's in season, and it was ever so dear at home when one could get it. So I was thinking perhaps a lemon bar."

Er. Pastry time?

Nothing wrong with cake for supper! Except, you know, the whole 'nutrition' thing...
