Mystery Sign Theater 3000, Monday

In a couple of days, Bucky was going to take off for Wakanda again. They kept making what felt like progress, just... Agonizingly slow progress. But, with it being the week that it was, at least Steve had already announced he'd be visiting come Friday. So Bucky had that to look forward to.

In the meantime, the theater was playing another movie he hadn't actually seen yet.

It was going to be an education in both rock'n'roll as well as Jayne Mansfield.

Where Bucky could be found, if he wasn't in the auditorium.

"So what can a girl do, exactly?" Jesse asked, stepping in with a little grin on her face.

"Not sing, apparently?" Bucky offered with a wry look. "Distract, maybe."

"Sing or distract," Jesse echoed, as she approached him. "Is that all the options we get?"

Bucky shrugged his one good shoulder. "I mean... I think they were talkin' about just the one specific girl."

Jesse poked him gently in that one good shoulder. "Oh, sure, that's what they want you to think," she joked.

Bucky let the shoulder in question lean back under the poke a little. Passed for playful by his standards.

"Why, you got better intel?"

"Just well-informed paranoia," Jesse said, "And a working knowledge of stereotypes throughout history."

"Darn," Bucky deadpanned, "I only had one of those."

Maybe making jokes about it was a sign he was actually making progress.

Jesse grinned. "You wanna go in and watch and we'll see if I'm right?" she teased.

"Gracious of you to say 'if'," Bucky replied, with a much less successful deadpan, this time. He nodded at the concessions. "You want snacks to go with it? There's more than M&M's, this week."

"Wow," Jesse said, obligingly looking in that general direction. "You're really going all-out."

"Well, they tell me I manage this place, so..." Bucky replied, trailing off with the requisite little shrug. "Gotta have some perks, right?"

Of course, 'they' was Ingrid, and Ingrid only kept trying to make him manage the place.

"So what do you recommend?" Jesse asked. "'Cause this sounds like a seriously important choice."

Bucky considered it - pretended to consider it - for a beat.

"Anything except the M&M's."

Which would also save her from another round of grumbling about how those had seemed to be the only chocolate he'd even see during parts of the war.

"Well, that doesn't get me very far," Jesse teased.

She leaned in to brush a kiss against his cheek.

"So, we can rule out 'picking out her own favorite snacks' as what a girl can do?"

Rude to snark when you were getting a peck on the cheek, Barnes, you should know this.

"No, but we can rule out 'advising your customers' as part of your skillset as the cinema guy," Jesse said, grinning. "Do you have some Skittles?"

"Customers pay, Jesse," Bucky replied, nodding towards the nearest side of the concessions stand. "You don't count. But the Skittles are right there. Original and sour."

"I mean, if I need to pay you money to get proper customer service, I will," Jesse said, mouth curving. "But fine. I'll go get my Skittles. The sour ones."

And she was moving right there.

"Fair enough," Bucky said, watching her move (what?), "but you can't pay me to join you in the theater, I'm just not that kind of gal."

"Can I... puppy-dog-eye you into joining me in the theater?" Jesse asked, snatching the Skittles from the stand.

"Don't know," Bucky replied. "Let's see it."

Clearly just teasing. Hell, in reality she probably could've just taken his hand and led him anywhere, but he wasn't going to say that.

Jesse widened her eyes considerably.

Sadly, the lantern jaw didn't really lend itself to full cuteness mode, but she was trying.

Bucky did his honest best at holding back his amused look. He wasn't very successful: sometimes his best wasn't very good.

"Oh yeah," he said, "that'll get me to sway, sure."

A gangster hires a down-and-out press agent to make his airhead girlfriend a singing star.

I watched a Little Richard documentary last night, and it should've come with a warning about how you will never be able to get Tutti Frutti out of your head again.
