It meant they were banned from decorating for Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving, was what it meant.

"But that's not what 'until Thanksgiving is over' means!"

"Ooooh, those waffles sound amazing," Arden said. "Gray, stop bothering these poor people about Christmas and help me eat these waffles."

"But it's only three months away, Arden!" That was so soon!

"And Halloween and Thanksgiving are both sooner than that," Arden pointed out. "It's been autumn for like a day and a half."

"Pfft," Gray said. "Those are boring holidays. Okay, Halloween is fun with all the scary movies and stuff, but Thanksgiving is just food." File it under: things he would never say in Raiden's hearing.

Arden was absolutely glancing around to make sure that Raiden wasn't anywhere near them to hear that. "How about you start using Will It Waffle Wednesdays to do Christmas-themed foods, at least until you're allowed to decorate?"

You know, in two months.

"I wanted to," Gray sulked, "but apparently it's 'not seasonally appropriate.'" Yes. He did the finger quotes. "So we have to have fall waffles. Hence the apples. Which you're here to help me eat, right?"

"Oh, you never have to ask if I'm here to hose down a bunch of apples, especially if cinnamon is involved," Arden said. "I discovered that apple cider is to Yankees what sweet tea is to Southerners."

"They're more seasonal about it," Gray said, "although I guess that makes sense. Apples aren't in season all the time, even if they are available in the grocery store all the time now." Then he frowned. "I don't even know when they pick tea. Does it have a season?"

"Yeah," Arden said. "The season it's harvested affects the flavor of the tea. But most tea is grown in various places around Asia, so it's less a thing here. Unlike apples and cider. But like, Northerners have a whole thing about what counts as cider and what doesn't and how to make it, and all that stuff."

"That sounds exhausting," said the guy who found a lot of things exhausting, but also had been ready to deck the fucking halls about twenty minutes ago, like that wasn't a ton of effort. "I'm not that picky about anything."

This was lies. He absolutely could be that picky.

Arden looked at him. And then looked down at his shoes. Like, significantly.

"My name is Gray," he reminded her, rather than addressing any slander about his shoe choices. "Maybe you're working too hard at the library and need a nap," he suggested helpfully, like a helper.
