The Magpie Emporium, Thursday (1/15)

It was halfway through January already (how???) and you'd think Steph might have gotten used to writing the correct year on all the invoices and paperwork, but no. No, she hadn't. Granted, this situation was not at all helped by Saffron constantly and loudly demanding to be fed and then voicing her displeasure that her dish was not full enough for her liking, but still.

She was working on a total overhaul of the Kickstarter game recs board, complete with hand drawn and colored cutouts of various fantasy and sci-fi creatures, so the counter was a little bit of a mess. Oops.

Look, the Perk was still selling peppermint mochas so at least Vi could provide her girl with delicious drinks while she boggled over the passage of time.

"You get me. You really get me. I love you," Steph said the second she could pick up on the smell of minty chocolatey coffee.

Vi grinned and offered Steph one of the cups. "I guess I'll leave you two alone then," she teased.

"Smartass." Steph tossed a wadded up form with the wrong year on it in the general direction of Vi's head, grinning indulgently. "It's not a complete experience if you're not here, you know."

Unrepentant, Vi continued grinning as she lightly hip checked Steph. "I knew you were into the weird stuff."

"I am into you, so obviously," Steph retorted after a sip of coffee. "Mmm. I can feel my soul re-entering my body already."

Your day hadn't been that bad, Steph.

Unlike Saffron's, which didn't even include offerings of hot drinks.

"You are such a brat." Vi didn't sound the least bit upset as she tried to steal a kiss.

"Shut up," Steph replied after letting her steal that kiss, and lingering in it for a while. "You love it."

Saffron loved you despite this inexplicable massive failing, Snuggle Human.

"I do," Vi said, not really pulling away from Steph. "And I love you."

But what about Saffron? Surely Snuggle Human loved her best?

"Oh good, I was wondering, actually." Steph beamed impishly at Vi. "So I'm really glad you told me."

Saffron was right here, Snuggle Human.

"Let you in on a secret," Steph added in a playful half-whisper. "I love you too."

Steph. You'd literally told her that as soon as she walked in.

She might have forgotten since then and needed to be reminded. "You do?" See?

Saffron was adorably showing her fluffy belly for Snuggle Human to stick her face in. It was much more interesting than Food Human's face.

"Oh yeah." Steph took the oportunity of her closeness to Vi to sneak in another quick kiss. "I know, I've been really low key about it but I just can't keep it to myself any longer."

Saffron wouldn't even unsheath her claws if Snuggle Human did that! Was Snuggle Human really going to decline the most profound demonstration of her devotion?

Vi grinned, nudging her nose against Steph's. "Don't hold yourself back on my account."

Do it for Saffron's. Poor neglected Saffron's.

"You sure about that?" Steph sat down on the edge of the desk and reached out to pull Vi closer again. "Because I might just throw myself at you and never stop telling you so."

Meanwhile they'd lured Saffron in here with false pretenses.

"Anything but that." Oh, no, Steph being in a perfect position for more kissing. How terrible.

Yes, yes it was terrible how Food Human had entrapped Snuggle Human with her wiles.

Steph looped her arms around Vi's neck. "I'm taking requests, if you have a better idea." Oh no, the looming threat of more kissing.

There was already too much of that going on if you asked Saffron.

"I mean, I've got a few ideas," Vi said, resting her hands on the counter as she leaned in to nuzzle Steph's neck.

Saffron made the ultimate sacrifice of voluntarily coming near Food Human so she could drop pathetically onto Snuggle Human's hand. See? That's what she was supposed to use them for.

"I'm open to hearing them," Steph murmured, and glanced down at Saffron. "Aww, does somebody want to join in the cuddling?"

How dare you imply Saffron wanted to participate in any activity with you, Food Human, let alone that.

She wanted Snuggle Human cuddles while Food Human made herself scarce.

"Told you she was coming around," Vi said, scritching behind Saffron's ears. Saffron, for the record, was extremely put out, ignore the purring.

Food Human would preferably be on the opposite side of the island. Or the world.

"Either that or she thinks we need a chaperone," Steph said, grinning as Saffron's tail thumped against her leg.

Which was not because she was happy, mind you. She was trying to tell Food Human to go away. Didn't everyone know by now that the thumping tail of a vigorously purring cat meant 'go away, Food Human'?

Or the galaxy. She was sure she could distract Snuggle Human from being sad about it.

"Can't imagine why anyone might think that," Vi teased, hooking her free fingers through Steph's belt-loops. No, Snuggle Human, you had two hands and they were both for Saffron!

A few dimensions over too, for good measure. Snuggle Human would get over it, right?

"Hey, we are perfectly well-behaved," Steph said, once she'd stolen another kiss, and that sound was Saffron making a noise of profound disapproval, not a meow adorably interrupted by a yawn.

She certainly wouldn't be utterly miserable. Not while Saffron was here to comfort her.

Vi let her forehead rest against Steph's, grinning. "She's having such a good time right now."

Lies. Utter lies.

Saffron was all she really needed! She'd come to understand that soon!

As long as Snuggle Human wasn't around to distract her.

"She's purring so loud," Steph said, nudging her nose against Vi's.

No, it was angry purring. Angry purring! There was a difference!

Why was she being so recalcitrant?

"She's so happy too be here with us."

Angry purring!

It was like she thought Food Human was special or something.

"Well, I'm happy to be here with you too, Saffron," Steph said, forehead still pressed against Vi's.

Nobody had asked you, Food Human.

How would Saffron ever convince her otherwise?

"We both love you, Saffron," Vi said, grinning dorkily at Steph.

Press X to doubt, Snuggle Human.

Sometimes Saffron despaired of ever getting Snuggle Human to be objective about this.

"Hell yeah we do." Steph pulled Vi closer and snuggled into her. "Who's the best game store kitty-cat ever, huh?"

This was so cringe, Food Human.

It was one of the many injustices of Saffron's existence.

Vi nuzzled into Steph's neck. "And so pretty and fluffy too."

Utterly cringe. (Though obviously the answer was Saffron.)

Maybe if she sat up and gave Snuggle Human (and Snuggle Human only) the biggest, saddest pleading eyes ever it would work?

"With the cutest purr," Steph added as she kissed the top of Vi's head.

Stop trying to help, Food Human.

Well, it worked in the sense of Vi reaching for her phone so she could take a picture.

"Look at my girls."

Stop grouping her with Food Human!

"And nobody else's." Steph, much to Saffron's indignation, ran her fingers through aforementioned cat's fur. "I think we're both just fine with that."

Saffron would be just fine with you removing yourself from the equation, Food Human.

How dare Food Human scratch her ears right there, just where she needed it. How dare.

"Good, because I'm not planning on letting either of you go."

And Food Human didn't even have the decency to have done it by accident. No, she had to have the gall to know she really liked getting scritches in that spot.

Steph leaned up and kissed Vi on the cheek. "We're both pretty good at holding onto you and never letting go, as it happens."

Saffron would be happy if Food Human had been much less proficient at it, though.

The worst part was Snuggle Human didn't even complain about this encroachment on her responsibilities.

Vi tilted her head so she could steal a kiss in return. "Happy to hear it."

It was almost as if Snuggle Human encouraged it -- but no, that was a bit too far. It merely looked like she was encouraging it.

"We love you, babe." Steph tucked her head against Vi's shoulder, still petting Saffron's ears.

Snuggle Human was an innocent victim of Food Human's wiles.

"I love you too, Vi said nuzzling the top of Steph and Saffron's heads.

Steph was just not going to spend too long examining just how much of a warm and fuzzy feeling she got out of this particular moment, because... yeah. Something about the level of contentment she got out of it was frightening.

Don't mind Saffron trying to squirm her way onto Steph's lap in between them. It was only out of pure expediency so she could get closer to Snuggle Human and maybe push her away from Food Human in the process. No, it didn't matter that those two results were mutually exclusive.

After all, Saffron was the sensible one, who never did anything foolish.

Vi bit her lip to keep from chuckling as she watched Saffron. "If I'd known this was how we got her to get closer to you..."

And the smartest one, so they'd never wriggle their way out of her trap.

"I know, right?" Steph reached out to take hold of Vi's hand and tug it gently toward Saffron. "I think it's your turn to take over the petting so I don't push my luck."

Vi rubbed her thumb over Steph's before scritching behind Saffron's ears again. "I know my job," she said softly. "And who the real boss is."

Victory! Victory for Saffron! A thousand years petting.

"Correct. It's always the cat," Steph replied. "The one who is still in my lap, purring up a storm, which is awesome."

What if she felt like it was a victory for her too, Saffron? What then?

Saffron couldn't help it if Food Human was also delusional.

"I think we're trapped," Vi murmured. "Good thing we don't have any plans for the rest of the day."

Steph chuckled, low and warm, as she stroked her fingertips over the back of Vi's neck in a steady rhythm. "Little Bot can take care of the customers, right?"

No, no. Saffron's plans had not included having Food Human here, but she wanted the Snuggle Human attention she deserved and if there was no other way to get it, well.

"Yeah," Vi said, the words coming out in close to a purr as her own fingertips in Saffron's fur matched Steph's rhythm.

Food Human better not be making this weird. Bad enough she was involved in the snuggling.

"My two favorite girls take precedence. Sorry not sorry." Steph nudged her nose against Vi's and looked down, smiling as she watched her stroke Saffron's fur.

Please don't make this weird, Food Human. Please.
