Look. Look. Just because the store was distinctly devoid of any Valentine-themed displays, in accordance with Steph's refusal to contribute to the blatant commercialism of the holiday, that didn't mean that Steph herself wasn't occupying her every spare moment (so any that weren't helping customers, contacting suppliers, or feeding Saffron) with brainstorming newer and wilder Valentine's date ideas.

Although she was realistic enough to cross magic carpet ride off the list. Not because it was impossible, just because she didn't actually know anyone she felt she could reasonably cajole into hooking her up with a reliable magic carpet.

Vi, in the middle of trying to narrow down her own set of ideas, grinned when she saw Steph. (Though admittedly she would've done that anyway.)

"That's a thinking face if ever I saw one."

"You would know," Steph replied easily, giving Vi a grin in return before sticking her tongue out.

"I would," Vi agreed, vaulting over the counter just to show off. "Hey."

Well, don't mind Steph taking a step back to appreciate the display of athletic prowess, only to scurry back over and shut her laptop.

She leaned over to kiss Vi... well, behind the ear, as it turned out. "Hello there yourself. Very, very nice to see you."

Vi shivered and leaned into Steph's touch, doing what she thought was a very good job of pretending not to be curious about what Steph didn't want her to see. "It's always nice to see me, I'm delightful."

"Hell yeah you are." Steph pulled back just far enough to give Vi an impish smile and try to ruffle her hair. "But you still have to wait to find out what I'm working on, sorry."

"I don't even get a hint?" You could tell Vi was teasing by the fact she hadn't turned the puppy eyes on Steph.

Good thing, too, because Steph had a solid track record of folding immediately when the puppy eyes came out.

"You can wait two days," Steph informed her. "That's your hint right there."

Vi turned so she could slide her arms around Steph's waist. "Just let me know if you need anything from me," she said, mentally revising her own plans.

"You, obviously." Steph leaned in against Vi and rested her head on her shoulder. "That's all I need."

You know. Not a tall order.

Not at all.

"Done." Vi kissed the top of Steph's head. "You've got me."

Steph made a soft contented noise as she relaxed against Vi. "Lucky me," she said, lightly but completely in earnest. "Day okay so far?"

"Yeah," Vi said with a crooked grin. "Even better now."

For some reason.

"Funny, I was going to tell you the same thing." Steph tilted her head up to give Vi a fond, unabashedly sappy smile. "Missed you."

Look, how was Vi not meant to kiss Steph when she was smiling like that?

"Good thing I'm here then."

It was like that smile was only for Vi or something.

Steph laughed into the kiss and wrapped one arm around Vi's neck. "My hero."

Even if it wasn't, Vi was going to goats it all to herself. "That's me, here to save you from boring shifts."

...no, it really was only for Vi. Steph wouldn't let most people catch her dead looking that soft.

"And from dying of hunger, and a whole bunch of other things too," she added. "You've got a talent there, babe."

Good thing Vi wasn't most people, then.

"Gotta take good care of my girl," Vi said, kissing Steph's forehead.

No, as far as Steph was concerned, Vi was most certainly not most people.

"You always do." Steph kept her hand curled around the back of Vi's neck, fingertips stroking along the edge of her hairline. "The best care. You know how to make a girl feel really special."

Sure, sometimes this involved calling her a mongoose, but also sometimes it didn't.

Look, sometimes even a mouth as smart as Vi's had an off day.

"One girl in particular," Vi said, eyes half-closed. "She's real smart, but needs someone to look out for her."

Understandable. It was so busy most of the time, after all.

"Good thing she's got a girlfriend who's an expert at that then, huh?" Steph asked, her voice cracking a little from the sheer affection in it. "And you know, she tries her best to return the favor."

"Her girlfriend sounds real lucky," Vi said, bringing her hand up to cup Steph's cheek. "Though she's probably not as awesome as my girlfriend."

"You're right, she's not." Steph did her best to keep her voice neutral, which would have been a bit challenging while leaning into Vi's touch had she not honed her diabolical GM skills so much. "" She's more awesome. Hotter, too."

Vi was very impressed with Steph's diabolical GM skills, but then she impressed pretty easy when it came to Steph. "I find that hard to believe."
