Thursday Night at the Perk

Tonight's "CFS: Criminal Forensic Scientists" is a rerun, and she isn't supposed to be alone...but she'll be damned if she's going to hide away in her house. She figures some place busy and bright like the Perk will be safe enough, so she shop-hops so she's always around people until she gets there. Sitting down with a latte and a book, she's just...quiet.

I'd...give you the space. I'd trust what you said. [she lies smoothly]

Parker studies her, arms folded. "Sure you would." She turns to Zero. "Zero? Don't we have to get back?"

Her expression telegraphs, So we can plan someone's demise tomorrow morning. Without getting caught.

Yeah, I have that homework you were going to help me with.

*After a moment's thought.*

In my room.

*Her expression says, He is so toast.*

[Distracted by Shane, she just raises a hand slightly] Ok, girls, have a good night. No more coffee...Parker. Bye Zero.

"Night, C.J. Shane?" Parker tries to telegraph Don't worry, we're on it with a look, but isn't sure the message is received. "I'll talk to you later. C'mon, Zero. Homework awaits."

Yeah, good night, Professor.

*Follows Parker out, looking slightly worried and mostly angry.*

"No, you wouldn't," Shane says, sitting back in her seat with a disbelieving chuckle. "You might give me space and trust what I said, but in the meantime, you'd be on the warpath, trying to find out who was responsible. You're a bitch on wheels when you wanna be."

Bitch on wheels...yeah. [She sounds utterly defeated. Once the other girls are gone--] Shane, hon. I don't want you to get hurt. This isn't something you can do. And honestly, if I were in bitch on wheels mode, even I'd know I needed an army. [She pleads with Shane with her yes to just let it go.]

"I took on Crowley for Tara," Shane says, lowering her voice so that only CJ can hear her, an undercurrent of fierce determination belying her relaxed demeanor and tone.

After a moment, she sits back in her seat again, letting out a deep breath, her posture defeated, shoulders slumping. Meeting CJ's eyes for a moment, her own grow shuttered as she looks down at her mug.

[Her eyes hollw and her tone flat] Mr. Crowley would never be as savage as...just, please sweetie. I'm really tryng to protect you. And it's just a couple bruises.

"Fine," Shane says softly, her eyes still focused on her mug.

Shane...please. I love you so much. If anything happened to you...I'd...[she sighs and looks down, resigning herself to the fact that her protests are falling on deaf ears all over town, and double with the people who love her the most]...Talk to Ten before you go off half cocked.

"I love you, too," Shane insists as her head snaps up. "And you know I wouldn't."

I know, it's just...everyone's so worried, and I have it under control. [she mumbles to herself]

"Everyone's worried because you won't tell them what's going on," Shane says evenly. "But I'm calling Ten and I'm going to find out what the hell is up."

Yeah...whatever. All four of you just gang up on me. I keep secrets, Shane. You know that. [She sighs heavily] For good reasons.

"I know," Shane says, her gaze as well as her tone softening considerably. She looks down at her mug, idly clinking her feather ring against the side of it. "I just... I just love you, Mom. Okay?"

I know sweetie. I love you too. [Eye's the ring] That's a new one.

Shane stops clinking and curls her fingers, studying the ring for a moment, a small, slightly wry smile quirking up one corner of her mouth. "Yeah," she murmurs. "Crowley sent it."

I thought you and he weren't, um, on good terms?

"After what happened with Tara, I... was grateful, but... I didn't wanna have anything else to do with him," Shane says honestly. She scratches a hand through her hair, brows wrinkling. "Tara and I talked, though, and... she... she thinks he's got good in him."

"Anyway, this was a ... a thank you gift," she murmurs quietly, looking slightly bashful. "For -- for helping Mr. Phale when he was so sick."

I'm so glad you both came. I kept that up for hours and I was so exhausted. It wasn't sticking....What an awful night. My birthday, the night the angel almost died.

"If it had been anything like the spell we did the night before, we couldn't have done it," Shane says honestly. "But... it was... so easy, compared to that. All I had to do was... tell Tara how much I love her."

Her eyes stray over to where Tara and Tonks are discussing the magic study group and her eyes shine with warmth and happiness as she watches Tara.

Really? [She looks at Shane, so in love with Tara...and she's so in love with her daughter.] That would be easy. Tara's a good woman.

"Yes, she is," Shane says softly, nodding. Lifting her mug, she looks back at CJ, offering her a shy, slightly self-conscious smile as she takes a sip of her tea.
