Caritas: Friday

The doors to Caritas open and the music spills out to the night air.

Outside a sign proclaims:

"Tonight: The Magnificent Illusions of GOB!"

The Zombie band starts playing "The Final Countdown"

GOB walked out and did his usual schtick involving flailing around the stage, twirling linked handkerchiefs, throwing cards into the crowd, and at one point, holding a knife in his teeth. He looked like a big dork.

When Tino wheeled out the magical box for sawing someone in half, GOB looked out into the crowd to call for a volunteer. He didn't know if the volunteer he had previously talked to was back in town yet, so he was a little worried that he might get somebody who would be uncooperative.

Becky smiled and lifted her glass to him in a wane salute.

Spotting Becky, GOB pointed and yelled "Becky! Come on up!" over the music.

Becky froze. She had forgotten she'd made the offer to be in his act.

She finally rolled her eyes, and made her way up to the stage.

GOB opened one end of the box for Becky to get into. When she reached the stage, he whispered "It's completely safe. Just scrunch up into the front of the box. Somebody else is playing the legs."

He then offered his hand, both for show and to help her walk up the stairs into the box.

Becky made a big show of gracefully climbing into the box. She smiled sweetly at the audience (or lack thereof) and hissed through her teeth, "Remember - this goes wrong, and you are dealing with Miho."

GOB muttered to himself that he may have just made a terrible mistake, but still smiled brightly for the crowd. The crowd of employees. Whatever. He was going to have to change days for his act.

He closed the box, then pulled out the big blades that would soon be cutting Becky in half.

Becky sighed, and reflected on how the box reminded her of the trunk of a car. Except less roomy.

She wiggled her toes. "It's hot," she whined.

She then remembered her part. "Oh, um," she said in an exaggerated and breathy voice, "I'm so frightened about being cut in half! This is scary!"

"You can tone it down a little," GOB muttered.

He then put the saw blades into their guides and pushed down with flair.

Becky was now cut in half. Really. Her toes were wriggling in the half of the box that GOB had just wheeled three yards to the right. Magic!

"Amazing," Becky said, wide-eyed and not at all sarcastically. "And it didn't hurt even one little bit! You should be a surgeon. Or a miracle worker!"

"You're lucky there's nobody here," GOB said, thumping his hand slightly on the legs box.

On the thump, the NPC girl in the box opened up her half and whined that she'd been in there for too long and there wasn't enough air and why isn't she backstage if the box is open?

"Tino?" GOB called. Tino then came out to roll that half away.

"Ta da," GOB said, pouting.

Becky looked vaguely sympathetic. "Tough break. Can I get out now?"

"Yeah, feel free," he said, lifting up the box lid.

"I really have to talk to Lorne about changing nights for my act. And then I have to get better NPC townies in the act."

He then looked at the zombie band and said, "Oh my God, you can stop playing now."

Becky arched a brow as she climbed out. "It was very impressive, anyway," she said seriously. "And notice me not using my sarcastic bitch voice."

GOB seemed thrown by this. He wasn't used to such a lack of sarcasm from Becky. "Thanks," he said cautiously.

"So the whole presentation is good, at least? Even if the lack of crowd and actors brought in beforehand need word?"

"It has flair," Becky replied wryly. "You ought to do something with fire. People love fire."

"Fire?" GOB asked. "Huh. I think you're onto something. I'll have to work on some tricks with that ~~even though it'll probably end in tears. My tears. And severe burns~~."

With Becky seeming so friendly tonight, GOB felt okay with asking her a question. "So how was your trip home? You went to see your mother right?"

"Yep," Becky said. "It was fine. She and my dad are both good."

She felt very generous sharing so much.

"That's really nice," GOB said, happy for her. His family was insane, so he couldn't really relate to a good family holiday. But it was good to see that someone else could.

"You know, you've been so good about this thing tonight, if you want anything from the bar, it's on me," he offered.

Becky smiled, and then realized rather quickly that she was, oh noes, actually showing emotion.

"Sure. 'Course, let's hope Tino doesn't ask you how old I am."

"Why? How old are you?" GOB asked.

Becky winked. "However old you want me to be." She cocked a brow. "Officially, though, there was a Rebekah Vartan born in Basin City in '87. But I know nothing more than that."

"'87?" GOB did the quick math, noted that Becky had done quite well for herself in the business world for her age, and maybe let a small whistle escape. Then they arrived at the bar. (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomtownies/497184.html?thread=19534112#t19534112)

Drink!

Becky smiled at Tino and ordered her usual scotch on the rocks, and watched GOB take the stage.

GOB walked up to the bar and told Tino, "I'll have a Scotch, and whatever Becky wants is on me."

"Rum and Coke, Tino," Becky said smoothly.

GOB noted that Tino didn't even check Becky's ID. Either she was very good or Tino was incompetent. He was willing to give this one to Becky.

"You know, it's kind of weird seeing you out of the Sin like this. The sarcasm is down, I'm not constantly worrying about a slicing... It's strange."

"Don't get too comfortable with it," Becky said with a sidelong glance. "Just because Miho's not here doesn't mean that there isn't at least one highly-armed girl in the room."

"You see, I'm actually more comfortable with that," GOB said, taking a sip of his scotch. "I mean, I know I can't be hurt in here, but I probably have to go outside sometime, right?"

"Uh huh. But you don't have to worry unless you piss me off. Which you have yet to do," Becky said somewhat reassuringlyish.

"I am somewhat reassured by that." GOB raised his glass in a toast and said, "I hope to keep from pissing you off for a long, long time."

"In spite of how much fun it might be fore me, or how badly I might need target practice," Becky agreed solemnly, lifting her own glass.

GOB was now comfortably terrified of Becky again. Things seemed normal once again. "Er, that is a joke, right?"

"Probably," Becky shrugged.

"Good to know," GOB said.
