Empire Records and Bidet [2/7]

Lucas has opened up the shop and is sitting at the sales desk, though not with his sudoku. Instead he has a laptop out and is peering, eyebrow perpetually raised, at various websites.

It could be he's researching information regarding the weird phone call he got yesterday. More likely, he's looking at the sort of websites he ought not to be looking at while working.

Today's music mix is classic blues and jazz.

She walks in and looks around in wonder. A real record store. She may well have died and gone to Heaven. Spying Lucas, she heads over.

"Hey, Lucas. I told you I'd come in. My neice says I need someone called Minus the Bear."

"CJ." Lucas offered her a small smile. "Your niece has some good taste. Over in the 'why haven't more people heard of this?' section at the front." He saved a couple windows on the computer and stepped out from behind the desk to show her where to look.

"Hogan has great taste. She sends me cd's and such. Knows about my closet punk obsession." she trails off as she reaches the racks and delicately fingers through them. "Do you have any suggestions on someone I might turn her on to?"

Lucas raised an eyebrow. "It would help to know what music she already listens to. Other than Minus the Bear."

"She's all over the map. Green Day and The Killers and Snow Patrol and C-Mone and Scissor Sisters and K's Choice and, um...the new one sounds like early 80's Police to me. I can't think their name."

Lucas nodded slowly, his eyebrow still raised. "Perhaps something a little bit . . . different, then? One of the more gothic operatics, or the experimental independant groups?" Lucas lead her a little bit further down, pointing out Nightwish, Ego Likeness, and then Sufjan Stevens, then Frou Frou.

"She does like stuff she can move to. The only goth stuff she's ever mentioned was that she wanted to get...what was it? V&V Nation?" She takes the ones he hands her and looks them over; cover art not telling her much.

Lucas noted CJ's uncertainty. "Perhaps not Sufjan, then. It's a little bit more . . . mellow. The other three should be good for dancing, however. Nightwish is the most operatic, a lot of base and minor chords. Ego Likeness and Frou Frou are both electronica, female singers, though Ego Likeness has a bass male singing on occasion, too. The lyrics are clever; she might like them."

"Okay, I'm an easy sell. I'll take them. Now me...surprise me."

Lucas gave CJ a considering look, then lead the way through the racks of cds. About midway to the sales desk, he picked one up and tucked it under his arm so she couldn't see what it was, and then continued the rest of the way to ring everything up. Just before he aimed the barcode scanner at the cd he'd grabbed, he glanced at CJ. "You did say surprise you, right?"

"Yep, I sure did." She smiles wide, curious but patient, and she hands him her platinum card.

Lucas nods approvingly, finishes ringing everything up, and bags it for her. When the curiousity gets the best of her, she'll be finding this album in the bag.

"I hope you enjoy it."
