Caritas - Open [3/3]

Lorne's in a mood as he sets up the stage for his opening number. Not the kind of mood that's going to get your head bit off if you approach him; they're only into human meat on his mom's side of the family anyway, and he really doesn't take after that side. Just the kind of mood that means you'll catch him staring off into space every so often as he tweaks the dials on the bass booster. Something's off, and he can't decide whether it's feedback from the new amps, or just bad vibes in the old town tonight.

The show must go on, though, and Caritas is open.

__
{The OCD threads, however, are not yet up. Lorne does not threaten burnination if you comment before they are. He'll just get Angel to sing I Am The Very Model Of A Cartoon Individual at you. In Swedish.}

{Threads up! Play away! No danger of Angel singing at you tonight. Not here, anyway.}

Next week GOB will begin showing up for work again. I swear I'm not TRYING to make him a deadbeat entertainer!

Parker needed a big, big, big drink. Logan being stupid. Bel and Angel being stupid. Darla on the loose. Trip to England, and then, Lee. Not to mention the whole Jarod thing.

"One strawberry daiquiri, as much rum as possible."

Janet ordered a margarita and turned to Parker. "So?" she asked.

"That come in doubles." Parker took the drink gratefully and smiled at him sincerely if very tiredly. "A big one? Darla's out and about. Watch yourself. I don't want you or anyone working here having to deal with her again."

"So." She moved her daquiri glass around, making condensation rings on the countertop. "God, I don't even know where to start. The middle, since I don't know where the start is." Parker smiled a very unhappy smile at Janet. "I'm kind of falling for my best friend. And he doesn't feel the same."

"Oh, great," said Janet, taking a very large drink of her margarita. She'd slipped Tino a very large tip for making it just that much stronger. About triple what she usually gave him, as a matter of fact. "Falling for a friend is hell. Especially if he doesn't reciprocate."

She could probably guess who, but she'd wait for Parker to get there.

"I'm getting that. Right now I'm avoiding Jarod, and hoping it wears off." She palmed her face, and took a big, long sip of the daiquiri. "The other thing, which I had time to tell all the rest of the library aides, is that Lee and I hooked up on Saturday night. Which wasn't the world's best idea, given the first thing."

"People here are not stupid," Parker noted. "At least, not as stupid as you'd think." She took another slow pull on her drink. "Angel went to see her. Got hurt. He's such a dumbass. So who knows where she is. And I was trying to figure out another magic-induced problem last night, which took a while. Plus I leave tomorrow for England until Wednesday, and I was working on that until the last second. I really, really need this drink, Lorne. It's been a helluva week."

Parker looked away. "But, uh. That's not really... that's not why I'm here tonight." Her lips turned down sadly, and she leaned her chin on her hand. "Do you have time for a reading? And can I not get on stage for it?"

"I've been busy sulking about my hands," said Janet. "And other things." She shook her head minutely and sipped at her margarita. "Well... If you're interested, and Jarod's not, what's the harm in looking for something with someone else? Though if you show up in the infirmary after a chat with Kara, then there's the harm."

Re: The Bar

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-03-04 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Parker stirred her drink with her straw, and said, "I think I hurt Lee's feelings pretty badly. I told him about the Jarod thing last night, and how I didn't think I could feel like that about him right now, and... anyway. It's not going to happen again. Lee's got more scruples than I do." She scrubbed her eyes. Not crying, no. Just stinging a little. "I have no idea if he's even told Kara. Or if he's going to."

Re: The Bar

[personal profile] janet_fraiser 2006-03-04 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
"You may be all tough and hard on the outside, Parker, but I can't see you getting involved with a guy and him getting nothing out of it." She frowned at her drink. "I don't think it's a lack of scruples. But I could see that Lee would maybe be looking for something different than you were. And you know what? Kara's problem should be with Lee, if she has one, not with you. He's the one she's involved with, after all. Or sort of involved. I never see them together these days."

"Thank God Tino made this drink strong," said Janet. "After a week like we've had, I've needed this."

Re: The Bar

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-03-04 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
"You think?" Parker leaned her head on her hand, and grimaced. "Tell him didn't go like I thought it would. Maybe I've been spoiled by Jack, who doesn't expect anything, and is so confident he doesn't care if I feel things for other guys." She looked gloomy. "He said he's not happy with her. And that it's not my problem. I don't know, I think I made it worse."

"Longest freaking week ever. I'm so glad we can sleep in when we get to England." Parker took another couple icy swallows of her drink, closing her eyes.

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-03-04 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm way too tired. And I'd probably bring down the room." Parker took a swig of her drink for courage, then rolled her eyes at herself. "You're gonna love this."

"A stones's throw from Jerusalem
I walked a lonely mile in the moonlight
And though a million stars were shining
My heart was lost on a distant planet
That whirls around the April moon
Whirling in an arc of sadness
I'm lost without you
I'm lost without you
Though all the kingdoms turn to sand
And fall into the sea
I'm mad about you
I'm mad about you

And from the dark secluded valleys
I heard the ancient songs of sadness
But every step I thought of you
Every footstep only you
And every star a grain of sand
The leavings of a dried up ocean
Tell me, how much longer? How much longer?

They say a city in the desert lies
The vanity of an ancient king
But the city lies in broken pieces
Where the wind howls and the vultures sing
These are the works of man
This is the sun of our ambition
It would make a prison of my life
If you become another's life
With every prison blown to dust
My enemies walk free
I'm mad about you I'm mad about you

And I have never in my life
Felt more alone than I do now
Although I claim dominations over all I see
It means nothing to me
There are no victories
In all our histories, without love

I'm mad about you
I'm mad about you..."

And then she took a really, really big drink, letting her hair fall in her face. "Got any bright ideas?" she asked. "'Cause I'm tapped."

Parker raised a tolerant eyebrow at his first disclaimer, then looked wistful, until the end, then she looked like she wanted to hug him. "You swear? Because right now, it feels terrible. I don't know why anyone puts up with this. I don't know why there aren't medical treatments for this!" She let out a breath, and closed her eyes. "But it's good to know it gets better, I guess."

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-03-04 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
Parker's smile of relief lit her up for a second. "Thanks, Lorne. I just-- he's my friend. I can't keep that if I'm always going to feel this way." She sighed, then tilted her head to the side. "Anything I can do for you? Anything to make your life easier this weekend? I don't ask you that often enough."

Deciding she didn't want to know if he was serious or not-- because hey, if serious? That was just odd-- Parker grinned. "Will do. I may even collect that twenty for you. And tell him you dress better than he does."

"Jack's a unique case," said Janet, grinning. "Lee's a little more romantic, I think, though romance and true love are hard to find. But he's right. It isn't your problem that he's not happy with her. On the other hand, it's not my problem either, but I do care about Lee. He's a friend. Neither of us want to see him hurting." She sighed. "If you did make it worse, you didn't mean to. But-- You can be there for him as a friend, at least."

"I'll be sleeping in while I'm here," said Janet. "Sam's not going, and since she's been practically missing all week, I don't want to leave her alone. I'm afraid if I do, she'll spend her entire break with physics equations."

Re: The Bar

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-03-04 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"I hope so. He said he still wanted to stay friends, it wasn't like he doesn't want to ever see me again." Parker moved her drink around again, then shook her head. "It's going to be hellishly awkward doing the play. Won't that be fun, pretending to be his wife with this between us."

"Oh, God. That's right." Parker remembered what Sam had been doing, and why. "Definitely keep an eye on her. I think the whole thing with Professor Carter was hitting her pretty hard."

"At least it will make the feud between Oberon and Titania more realistic?" asked Janet. She sighed. "Maybe we can get a drink before you do the dress rehearsal?

"I've been letting her have her space for a while yay, ooc reasons," said Janet. "And you're right. It's affecting her a lot. She takes things involving that teacher very personally."

Re: The Bar

[identity profile] mparkerceo.livejournal.com 2006-03-05 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
"I like that plan. Even if it lead to the problem in the first place. Otherwise, it'll be way too damn obvious that Titania wants to jump Oberon, and he's looking for his girlfriend in the third row to protect him." Parker smirked.

"I'm getting that. She didn't explain all of it to me, just enough to know that 'auntie' is a ridiculous word for her. And since the Professor already admitted to the robot thing, I expect that explanation is weirder than what I already know, so...." She shrugged. "I hope you guys have fun over the break though. Next time, hit me if I say I'll organize it, please?"

"I've come to the conclusion that alcohol is an absolute necessity for any school production at this school," said Janet. She nodded seriously, but smirked at the last second.

"'Auntie' is possibly the most ridiculous word for her ever," said Janet. "I think you've figured out by now that any time we use a familial relationship to explain something, it's too complicated and classified to explain properly. And she's more complicated than almost anything." Janet took a long drink from her margarita. "I don't know about fun, but we may have to burn Jack in effigy a time or to." Janet slanted a disbelieving look at Parker. "You said you'd organize it? Generous of you, but you're right. Bad idea."
