Empire Records and Bidet [3/21] Evening Shift

Lucas, what with not being an apple tree any more and all, was hanging about Empire, despite the fact that he now had employees to do this sort of thing for him.

Jaye's a girl on a mission. Okay, the mission doesn't make a lot of sense to her, to be honest. But Veronica asked her to do it, so she's doing it. Also, because the animals told her to. Stupid animals.

Of course, she's also got some experience stealing things, albeit that usually means swiping little talky things from therapists' offices and the link, so she may not be the best at shoplifting. She's trying to act casual, browsing the CD's occasionally and seeing if there's actually any music worth another strike on her record for.

Paige is of course working, if by working you mean thinking of cool badges to make and trying to work out how exactly her love life went so hideous wrong.

She's making an effort to at least appear happy though, or at rather her t-shirt is. She notices Jaye and raises her hand in greeting.

Casual. Yay. Because it would be better to play along like you're a nice law-abiding paying customer by doing things like drawing attention to yourself in a positive manner. Or something.

Jaye gives a little smile and asks, "Anything good here?"

She moves out from behind the counter, "depends what you're into, but Lucas seems to have pretty much everything, so yeah lots, did you have anything in mind maybe I could recommend something for you."

"Um, I dunno, maybe something a little-"

Take me!

And me!

Jaye's eyes widen at the CD cover in the rack, and smiles back at Paige. "What's that section waaaaay over that way?" she asks, pointing all the way across the store.

Paige raises an eyebrow and follows the finger standing on her tips toes to get a better look, "this sounds really bad doesn't it? But I'm not sure," she admits wondering over towards the section.

Once there she calls back to Jaye, "Guys who died several hundred years ago," she says flicking through the CDs to work out eactly what that actually means, "ah classical music, this is the classical music section. Good to know!"

And as Paige is gone, Jaye realizes that hey, she's supposed to get caught. Okay, she officially sucks at sneaky. So she isn't too subtle when she grabs a few more CD's to stick into her purse.

Stealing's hard.

And luckily Paige is now on her way back to where Jaye is and sees her putting the CDs in her purse, she raises an eyebrow, not too sure what to say what I moment.

"You're um meant to pay for those you know?" she says wondering how mad Lucas is gonna be that someone's been shoplifting she was keeping an eye on the store.

Lucas was, in fact, hanging about the shop, and had spotted Jaye on the CCTV system. He rolled his eyes and pushed himself to his feet. After a few moments to swap into his running shoes, just in case, he stepped out into the store and wandered as casually as possible over to Jaye.

"Having trouble finding anything?"

Funny thing is, trying to get caught or not, there's something that goes off in Jaye's brain that makes her panic at the thought. It doesn't even matter if she's even been in trouble for anything worse than that before. It's just a synapse that fires with a giant MEEP painted on it that travels down the brainwaves to her mouth in the form of "Ididn'tdoanything."

Lucas nodded slowly. "Of course not. You were just holding those CDs in your purse to . . . keep them warm."

"Yes. Totally. What you said."

Lucas raised an eyebrow. "I really don't understand why you kids don't just steal music online like everyone else." He crossed his arms and glanced back at Paige. "Right, let's step into the back room for a conversation, shall we?"

Long pause.

Jaye looks longingly at the door.

And back at Lucas.

"...Okay."

Lucas lead the way into the back. As soon as they were out of earshot, he turned to face Jaye. "You want to tell me why you're shoplifting?"

Why deny it. "It's what all the cool kids are doing?"

"Uh . . . huh. The cool kids." Lucas sighed and took a seat, waving for Jaye to do the same. "That's one answer, how about the real one?"

Jaye sits. She's not about to actually tell the truth about that because she doesn't want to mess up whatever Veronica's doing, so she relies on the excuse she was told to use. With a modification or two. "It's my friend's birthday and the bastards at the theater are never open so I can't work in order to afford to get him anything good."

Lucas nodded, idly sifting through some recently made buttons on his desk. "Money issues seem to be pretty common in this town."

Make a match.

Jaye really tries to ignore the llama. Tries really hard.

"Well, you know. Times are tough... and... stuff."

Make a match.

Jaye leans over to start looking through the buttons on Lucas' desk for another llama.

Lucas raises an eyebrow as Jaye starts sifting through the buttons. She wasn't trying to steal something from him while he was sitting right there, was she? "I see. What's your name?"

"Jaye. Is there another llama that goes with this one?" she asks, distracted and hoping this one button is just lonely.

"Um, no. I only have one llama button right now." Lucas frowned. "Okay, Jaye, I'm not going to call the police, because frankly, the police in this town scare me and I don't want you coming back with a gun. But I also can't let you get away with shoplifting."

No cops are good. But... "So what are you going to do?"

"I'll offer you a deal. Sounds to me like you're not happy where you're working now, and I could use an extra employee or two, considering that the ones I've got keep having to call out because of detention or play rehearsals or shooting things."

Tah dah! "Well, I actually like not working because my bosses are slacky bastards," she admits. "The money's just-"

Make a match.

Jaye reaches across the desk to cover the llama with her hand.

Lucas's eyebrow went up again. "Of course, if you're going to keep stealing from me. . . ." He looked seriously at Jaye. "What do you want to do, here, Jaye? Because the scary troopers are an option."

"I don't know," she flails. "It isn't like I make a habit out of stealing things." Unless they tell her to. "I can never come back. Or you can call my parents and tell them I'm a bad seed which they already know but this will make my next trip home interesting."

She's now glaring at her hand. Specifically, the llama under her hand.

Lucas starts to wonder if this girl is actually a klepto, or if she's just going for an insanity plea. "Okay, how about you leave the things you were trying to steal here, and don't come back, and we can skip the 'bad seed' conversation with your parents." He's still looking at the hand over the llama button. "That includes buttons, unless you want to give me two-fifty."

Jaye turns the button over so it's facedown on the desk. "Deal," she agrees, handing over the CD's.

Lucas nodded and took the CDs. He watched Jaye carefully as he reached out to take the button back, as well. "Glad we could come to an agreement."

"Me, too, can I flee the scene of the crime with permission now?"

Lucas smirked. "Go ahead. And good luck with that job thing."

Jaye gets up and heads out of the office, quickly.

So quickly that she doesn't notice the guy she's about to bump into inside the store.

The guy isn't expecting to be run into, as most guys aren't, so he's shocked into dropping his CD's. "Hey, watch where you're going!"

"Sorry," she says, and goes to help him pick up the things he dropped until she realizes that might look bad. Especially when one of them is one that she tried to steal.

Match!

Come on, be a buddy!

Jaye points at the CD on the ground. "No! Fleeing now!" she says, and runs out of the store before she can be accused of anything.

The bakery clerk just shakes his head and picks up his stuff, standing. "Weird."

Lucas watched her go with a faint scowl, then nodded to the new customer. "To say the least. Can I help you find anything?"
