The Park: Sunday Afternoon

It was entirely too gorgeous a day to spend time indoors, which is why Jack and Sam were currently enjoying an impromptu picnic in the park, featuring handwavy coffee from The Perk and snacks from J, GoB.

The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the ducks didn't seem to be harbouring any deep-seated resentment over their brief time as Meerkats.

It was just another beautiful day in Fandom.

Jack met her eyes, scanning her face, then slowly smiled. "Thank you, Sam," he said softly. "And you are far too good for my ego." Straightening, he looked around the park before turning back to her. "But we're supposed to be working on your impulsiveness training, right? If you could do anything, right now, what would you do?"

"Likewise," she said, and then was startled by Jack's question. "I...have no idea."

"No idea at all?" Jack grinned at her. "We could taunt the ducks? Balance on the back of that bench? Do a cartwheel?" Thinking hard, he said, "I'm guessing running naked through town is probably out of the question."

"I'm not running naked through town," Sam rolled her eyes, "although I've never skinny dipped. I wouldn't mind trying that when it was warmer. But now? Hmmm."

Jack's eyes lit up. "As soon as it's warmer, I'm taking you up on that. Of course, its impulsiveness is kind of dampened by the fact that we now have a plan, but that won't make it any less fun." He sighed a bit sadly. "You really can't think of anything? I think I might have failed in my calling as a tutor."

"We can't have that..." Sam thought for a minutes, then scrambled to her feet and headed for the nearest tree that looked sturdy enough to support her weight. "If I break anything, call the clinic."

She put both her hands on the lowest branch and proceeded to pull herself up, then straddled it and waved down to him.

He hopped up and moved to stand under her. "That's perfect!" Eyeing the tree dubiously, he asked, "Think it's safe if I join you?"

Sam, getting into the spirit of the thing now, moved over and arranged herself so she was hanging upside down by her knees, grinning at him. "Maybe? We won't know until we land on our heads."

"You seem to be upside down," he laughed. "I'm so proud." He walked in a circle around her, then grinned wickedly. "You're not ticklish, by any chance, are you?"

She squealed. "Don't you dare, Jack Harkness!"

Laughing, he reached up and put his hands on her knees, peering down at her. "Oh, it's so tempting, Upside-down-Sam. So very, very tempting, but I won't." He stepped away and hauled himself up, straddling the branch and shuffling down until he was next to her. "I'm afraid of what you'd do to me once we got down."

"You should be," she said as she reached up, grabbed the branch, and pulled herself up. "Whoa, lightheaded." She braced one hand on Jack and the other on the tree.

"Don't worry, I am. This place seems to be filled with women who could break me in half. Luckily I like it." Jack wrapped his hand around her shoulder. "No falling off, now. I really don't want the next impulsive thing to be a visit to the clinic."

"Yeah, that would suck." Sam balanced herself again and leaned back against the trunk. "God, I haven't done this in years. And I can't believe you were going to tickle me!"

Jack let his hand fall and chuckled. "Oh, I wouldn't have. At least, not while you were hanging upside down from a tree. It may await you in the future, though." Still chuckling, he glanced down at the ground, then back at Sam. "Are you having fun?"

"I am," she beamed at him. "What about you?"

"I really am. You're great company, Sam." Jack leaned back carefully until he was lying on the branch, legs dangling on either side, hands behind his back to hold the branch. "I didn't think we'd end up in a tree, but I'm very impressed with your impulsiveness."

"You too." She leaned forward over Jack, touching her nose to his. "Thanks, and I didn't think so either. But I'm not complaining."

Smiling, Jack lifted his head and kissed her softly. "Neither am I."

Surprised, Sam kissed him back without thinking.

Maneuvering very carefully, Jack freed one hand and settled it on the nape of her neck, holding her close while he deepened the kiss, brushing his lips softly over hers.

Sam left one hand on the branch, but she settled the other at Jack's waist, biting lightly at his bottom lip.

Lips curling into a smile, he nipped back, letting his tongue dart out to glide across her lip.

Sam opened her mouth slightly and kissed him harder, scooting forward a little on the branch. She didn't notice that she'd taken her other hand off the tree trunk.

Jack noticed she'd let go, and tightened his grip on the branch, moving his other hand down Sam's back, pulling her tighter against him so she wouldn't fall. Letting his head fall backwards, he laughed softly. "Sam, much as I'm loving this, we're going to fall off."
