"Okay, so I think personally that while cake itself is good? Cupcakes are possibly better because they're smaller and thus the sweetness is concentrated," Greg explained to Isabel as they walked down to the beach after having handwavey dinner and picking up dessert. "And they have fun colors, too!"

"And in theory? It's much easier to hide the fact that you've had two or three cupcakes instead of just one just by rearranging what's left on the plate. You can't do that with cake," Isabel said. "Not that I would know that from experience," she added quickly.

"Oh no, of course not," Greg nodded seriously. "Just like how I certainly would never also like cupcakes because if one's sister were, hypothetically, making them, it's very easy to add a little more food coloring when she's not looking so that her teeth end up green when she eats them. You know, in theory. Not personal experience."

"Only in theory, of course," Isabel laughed, bumping against his shoulder. "Can I ask what her theorhetical reaction was? I know I'd be ready to kill Max if he ever tried anything like that."

"She was, theoretically, mildly annoyed and may have retaliated by possibly throwing a few items of my clothing onto the roof," Greg said, smiling. "We were, oh, thirteen and sixteen, I think. Hypothetically."

"A few? I would have emptied your closet. I admire her restraint," she grinned. "Did you always tease each other like that? Or did you mostly get along?"

"Mostly we get along. Allied forces against our parents, who think we're weird," he told her.

"I can relate to that. It's always been Max, Michael and I versus the rest of the world. Which includes my parents," Isabel said. "Unfortunately."

"Not quite the same thing," he said quietly, reaching for her hand. "And am I included in that tally? Or is this another thing where it's different here?"

Isabel took his hand and stepped a little closer. "It's totally different here. Not having to hide things? It's like this huge weight's been lifted and I can breath. It's why I didn't go home for the summer." She squeezed his hand. "And now I have another reason to be glad I didn't go home for the summer."

He smiled. "And I have reason to be happy I came," Greg said lightly. "I mean, for the cupcakes alone. J,GOB is just the best bakery I've ever found. It's totally validated my coming here."

A single eyebrow raised as Isabel stopped walking and just looked at him.

"You're right," Greg said, all repentance - except for the smile he couldn't quite rid himself of. "I mean, the curriculum is also excellent."

"You're right," Isabel agreed. "Where else could we possibly have an educational experience that involves ninjas and creepy guys. The curriculum is definitely the best part of the summer."

"I made the creepy guy a balloon-dog today," Greg said. "It's his birthday."

"Forgive me if I don't run to get him a card. He still makes my skin crawl," Isabel said but she smiled at the thought of ballon animals. "You can make balloon animals? Really?"

"Kind of," Greg admitted. "They're not the best but they vaguely look like what I want them to, sometimes."

"You still do better then I do," Isabel admitted. "Unless you want snakes. I can make good balloon snakes."

"Snakes are my best," Greg said seriously. "I also make very good planets if given round balloons."

"That takes skill," Isabel said seriously. "And much talent." She pointed to a spot back from the water. "What do you think? Want to stop and enjoy the cupcakes?"

"That seems like an absolutely perfect plan," he agreed, starting to head over there. "And here's hoping that the storms from earlier don't come back."

"I don't know. I like storms," she said as she followed him over and carefully sat down on the sand. "It might be kind of fun. In a slightly wet and cold way."

"I think they're interesting, but, you know, from inside," Greg replied, flopping into the sand without a whole lot of care for his clothes. "Though I'm pretty sure I'd be amenable to being caught in it with the right company."

"The right company is very important," Isabel agreed. "We'll have to see if we can arrange that for you."

"Arrange? Do you have power over the weather, too?" asked Greg, raising a brow.

Isabel shrugged. "On a very small scale. Yes."
