Luke's Diner [5 PM FHT]

Rory had done good work, as usual, and the diner was decorate with blue streamers and balloons.

But no glitter. That's what Jaye was for.

"It really, really is," Anakin said, nodding his head. "We don't do this kind of thing at home." He paused. "Then again, Jedi don't have babies, so that might have something to do with it."

"Peacekeepers have them, they just don't get to keep them," she says. "You don't do things like buy things for the children."

Anakin bit his lip. "The 'no possessions' part of the Jedi Code really stinks for parties like this. I don't have anything to give."

He yanked at his braid. "Do I want to know where the Peacekeeper younglings disappear to?" he asked.

"I'm sure they understand," she says, and shrugs. "They don't go anywhere, really. We're raised by the Peacekeepers, not our parents. It's easier to go off and fight your whole life without having to worry what happened to a family member."

Anakin smiled. "Oh, okay. Jedi work kind of the same way. We're given up by our families when we're young--babies or toddlers at the oldest, generally--and raised at the Temple for the same reasons. There's also the added benefit of being able to negotiate more impartially when you have no allegiance to a particular world."

He shrugged. "That's the concept, anyway."

"So," Anakin said, spinning his glass between his fingers, "what did you bring for the baby?"

"Some green toy thing that makes noise, and clothes. Anything with writing on it, I promise was picked out by John," she says, because she's not going to be blamed for that.

"But the baby won't be able to read for a few months," Anakin said, looking confused. "Why would there be writing on its clothing?"
