Pizza Planet: Friday evening

River had managed to find Pizza Planet. It smelled nice inside, and it made her hungry. But she wasn't just hungry, she was also here to see Tyler on what she assumed was a date. That has exciting too. 

She waited while examining the menu. Lots of choice.

Tyler slid into the booth a little late.

"Hey, sorry to keep you waiting."

River grinned at him, looking very excited. "That's ok. I was reading the menu."

Tyler grinned back and glanced at the menu. "See anything you want?"

"Pineapple and ham," River said. "I've never tried pizza before. What are you having?"

"Just pepperoni," Tyler said. "They don't have pizza in the future?"

"Not in my part of the future," River replied. "Why did you come to Fandom?"

"I was in a bad place and this seemed like a good change."

The half-truth was routine by now.

"You?"

"I had been in a bad place, was a wanted fugutive and wanted to try being a teenager," River replied. "Has it been a good change?"

"Better than I could have known," Tyler said honestly. "People here are amazing."

He frowned. "Why were you a fugitive?"

"I agree," River said, smiling happily.

"The fugitive thing? I enrolled in the wrong school. It turned out to be a government experiment. The wanted their guinea pig back." The pain of the memories was appearent in her eyes.

"I'm so sorry," Tyler said. Her reaction to the troopers made more sense now. "Do you want to tell me what they did to you?"

She shook her head. "I only remember fragments anyway. And I want to be happy. It's hard sometimes though.

Tyler winced. "I get having things you don't want to think about," he said softly.

He forced a smile. "So what makes you happy, River Tam?"

That was always such a difficult question. And easy too. "I'm happy being here with you," she said, grinning.

"That's quite flattering," Tyler said. "Here with you is good."

A doofy smile formed on his face, and lasted until he got fidgety and flagged down a waiter. "Are you ready to order?"

River pointed at the menu, showing the waiter what she wanted to order.

Tyler did the same. "Thanks," he told the waiter.

He gave River a slight smile. "So. I havwe the thrill of detention tomorrow."

"Oh, I'd have shared it with you if I could," River said with a smile.

"It'll be fine," Tyler reassured her. "I had it once before. It's different from regular detention -- we played with costumes and handcuffs the time I was in there."

"Oh?" River laughed. "Fun?"

"Parts of it were," Tyler agreed, and frowned. "The person you see in my head -- he came out at the end. I don't want to lie to you about that."

"Don't lie," River said. "You worry about it. You don't have to worry about what I will think." She paused. "We both have things inside that are scary. But being scared makes it worse."

"It does," he said meditatively. "Though I think getting scared of him -- of me -- was one of the things that brought me back. Kept me alive, probably."

He frowned.

River frowned to. "That's scary then. Not knowing whether it's good or bad to be scared."

"Maybe the things inside our brains are different," Tyler suggested.

he brought a hand close to River's face. "I'm not scared now."

She smiled back at him, and reached out to let her fingers touch his. "Good. Neither am I."

Tyler let himself just enjoy the moment right then.

Then their pizzas arrived. River looked from Tyler to the food on her plate. It smelled nice.

Tyler had a slice of pie halfway to his mouth before he realized why River was just looking at hers.

He set his pizza down. "Pick up one of the slices -- the triangle-things. You eat it with your hands," he explained. "It's good."

As if to demonstrate, he picked up a slice of pepperoni again and bit in, burning the roof of his mouth. "LEt it cool down a little first."

She picked up one of the slices, balancing it on the tips of her fingers, and blew on it to make to cool down quicker. She took a bit.

"This is nice," River said with a mouth full of pizza. Swallowing the mouthful she put down the slice again, leaned across the table and kissed Tyler.

This time, Tyler didn't pull back. He put down his slice and then leaned in to deepen the kiss.

River eventually let go of him. "Right. Let's eat."

"Suddenly I'm not so hungry," Tyler said, and blushed.

He prodded his pizza with a finger. "I'm rotten at relationships," he said, tone almost a warning.

"Oh? Why?" River asked with her mouth full of pizza.

That was a very good question, and Tyler needed to think about it. He bit into his pizza and chewed as he thought.

"Not sure. Just, my last relationship -- it was bad. I was messed up and I think I took some of it out on her."

His eyes were anxious. "This might be different."

"I'm not her, whoever she was," River said.

"No. No, you aren't," Tyler said, looking determined.

And leaned over to kiss River again.
