Empire Records and Bidet [7/5]

Lucas opened up the shop, shaking his head at the Tommy Gnosis albums that he found by the stereo system.

Really, as though anybody didn't know by this point that it was really Hedwig who wrote all those songs.

In honor of the events of the weekend, Lucas put in a mix of Blondie, Tori Amos, Save Ferris, Poe, Garbage, Sleater Kinney, Hole, and the B-52s.

Marie and Conner walked in to the record shop.

"I want to play something kind of fun," Marie said. "Not just boring classical music."

"Then let's find something you want to play," Conner replied. "Like my friend Kira says, playing music's supposed to be fun, otherwise what's the point, right?"

He ran both hands through his hair and scanned the bins. "Okay. What kind of music do you like?"

"I mostly listen to country and blues," Marie said. "Occupational hazard of growing up in Mississippi."

Conner stepped over to one of the bins and flipped through it absently. "You can play blues on the piano, right?"

"Some, yeah," Marie said. "It usually sounds better with horns, but there are pieces adapted to the piano."

She looked around for the classical section, even though that wasn't really what she wanted to play.

Conner flipped through a batch of Dave Brubeck CDs. "How good are you at jazz?"

Marie shrugged. "I'm... okay, I guess. I'm not really good at the improv part."

Conner frowned. "Oh. Yeah, that's kinda tough. Hmm."

He wandered a little more, picked up a copy of Kira's CD, and snickered a little bit. "This one? Hmm. Nah."

Marie walked over and looked over his shoulder. "That looks like pop," she said, wrinkling her nose.

Conner put the CD back quickly. "Not a fan of pop, huh?"

"Not so much," Marie said with a shrug. "Back home it's mostly country music stations. And I have to say, the lyrics of most pop music are really dumb."

"You should hear Kira go on about that," Conner said, tapping the CD lightly as he put it back in the bin. "She can rant for hours about pop sellouts. No wonder she's had such a tough time trying to make it."

"Wait, your friend who's a musician actually has CDs produced?" Marie asked, her eyes wide.

"She does now, apparently." Conner shoved his hands into his pockets and leaned against the CD bin, grinning. "When I left home, which is in 2004, she'd just moved to New York to try and break into the business and wasn't having much luck. Then I found this album a couple of weeks ago."

He laughed, remembering something. "And Bridge and Z, you know how they're from the future in my dimension? They know her stuff, so I guess she ends up making it big."

"That's really kind of neat," Marie said. "Though I guess you can't exactly tell her, huh?"

"I wish I could," Conner said wistfully. "She's been so down lately, 'cause it's been so tough for her. But that would be a time paradox, or something like that, and I can't."

Marie nodded. "Yeah, if you told her something might happen to screw it up."

She moved to another rack of CDs and started flipping idly through.

Conner nodded. "That kind of sucks, yeah."

He went over to join her, peering over her shoulder at the selections. "Anything ringing a bell for you yet? You want something upbeat, right?"

"Not necessarily upbeat," Marie said, "Just not boring."

One CD caught her eye. "This might be something," she said, showing it to Conner.

"Gershwin, huh?" Conner asked, leaning over to take a closer look. "I'm not really super familiar with his stuff, but hey!"

He pointed at one of the listed tracks. "Can't go wrong with that one. I think it'd be perfect for you, really."

Marie grinned at him. "I think you might be right."

She turned around and gave him an impulsive hug. "Thank you so much for coming down here with me today."

Conner happily returned the hug. "Hey, being in the company of a pretty girl? I can't turn that down," he told her. "And helping a friend, that's an extra plus."

Yep, blushing.

"I'm going to buy this and then see if I can borrow Willow's computer to download the sheet music," Marie decided.

"I had to turn mine back in at the end of my workshop today, or I'd let you borrow it," Conner apologized. "I'm thinking of getting myself a new one, though."

He frowned. "You're all flushed again."

Having it pointed out just made her blush a little darker.

"I... I'm fine," Marie said lamely, not even able to come up with an excuse.

"You're thinking of buying a computer?" she asked, hoping to change the subject.

"Yup," Conner said, still looking at her worriedly. "I have to write home and ask for money, first, but having that laptop for class sort of spoiled me."

He peered at her a little more closely. "You're really looking kind of feverish. We should get you back to the dorms."

"Yeah, that might be a good idea," Marie said with a sigh as she headed for the register to pay for her CD.

With the CD bought and paid for, Conner held the door open for Marie on the way out of the store. "Plus, we can't have you getting sick before Friday, and you need to practice. So c'mon. Let's get you home, huh?"

"Right," Marie said, managing a smile. "I need to practice."

She knew she wasn't getting sick but she really wasn't sure how to explain that, so she just ignored it.

"And on Friday, you're gonna bring the house down," Conner said cheerfully as they set off. "I'll be there to cheer you on."
