Alfred was worried about Walter.

Yes, he knew that Walter could more than take care of himself. And he knew that he would have help.

And he knew that there was some evidence indicating that he would survive it.


But perhaps it was the manner in which the evidence was obtained that had him so worried. Besides.

Alfred was only human.


Cafe Fina is open.

Nither would Pippi.

She wasn't just coming into Cafe Fina to be someplace where Walter had been. She certainly didn't feel the need to be around butlery things.

She was getting a picnic lunch for today's raft building efforts.

She just didn't feel like making her own sandwiches and chilling her own fizzy lemonade.

"Hullo Mr. Pennyworth. I'm looking forward to taking your workshop."

"Oh, you've signed up for it?" Alfred asked. "That's wonderful. I look forward to teaching you." He produced a notepad. "Is there anything I can help you with?"

"Two things." she said. "A picnic lunch for four people who will be building something... And something for Pip, who has a horrible cold... I think he might be getting tired of soup."

Alfred nodded. "I heard about Pip. I think I have something in mind for him." He nodded to an open seat. "Would you care to sit and have something to drink while you wait?"

She also wondered what, if anything, Walter told Alfred.

Alfred nodded and went off to fetch a fizzy lemonade. He returned and set it in front of Pippi. "Food wont' be a minute. How have you been doing, Miss Longstocking?"

"Since yesterday?" she grinned. "Well... Pretty much."

"Oh?" Alfred asked. "Been busy then?"

Pippi shrugged.

"I talked to Walter and woke Pip up so he could watch the fireworks, and made plans with Nadia for her to join River and I in making a raft." she said.

"That's about it."

Nadia came in towards the beginning of the dinner shift. Not for food, though she would probably get something for Pip, just to talk to Alfred.

Because if anyone might be able to help her feel better about Walter being gone, it was Alfred.

There's a reason Alfred is teaching a stealth course.

Nadia jumped slightly. "Oh, Mr. Alfred, sir. I was, um, hoping I could talk to you about something."

He indicated a table for Nadia to sit at.

"Just some water. I'm not really very hungry. But if I could get some soup for Pip?"

Alfred nodded and whispered something to Wadsworth. He sat down at the table with Nadia and poured her some water from a pitcher. "I have a feeling I know what this is about," he said.

Nadia nodded. "Walter said that his other boss contacted you?"

Alfred nodded slowly. "I have spoken with Sir Hellsing, yes."

"Can you tell me what he's doing? He didn't tell me much, and I tried looking things up, but none of it seemed quite right."

Alfred looked down at the notepad and sighed. "I know some. My former service with the British Government gives me some pull, even with persons out of time and place from mine."

If Wadsworth was concerned for Walter's wellfare, he didn't show it.

It was possible that this had less to do with him being British and a butler and more to do with his lack of concern. The world may never really know.
