All & Sundries: Thursday afternoon

Jane arrived in due time for her first day on the job at what is, as far as she can tell, the general store.

Baldrick had pointed out where various departments are and how to figure out how much to charge for various items if it happens to be something that she doesn't know what it is.

Which could be a good three quarters of the store.

She has absolutely no idea where anything that isn't booze, lava lamps, silly puddy, or shampoo is. But she's happy to help you if she can.

She's not sleeping... Really.

All and Sundries is open.

After his trip down to Selkie Cove to see Phoebe, Walter decided to brave All and Sundries for a new digital camera. Imagine his surprise to see Jane (wo)manning the store.

"Hello, Jane. You work here now?"

"Hello yourself Walter." Of course Jane remembered the Limey kid from the French place. "Yeah, I guess I do. I also got a shift at that bar were people are always singing Tuesdays... Kinda trying to keep m'self busy."

"It's easier to pass the time when you have things to do," Walter agreed. "I just need to buy a camera." He pointed toward the display case.

"Those are cameras?"

"Yes." Walter pointed out the one (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009XQPHK/sr=1-35/qid=1154639858/ref=sr_1_35/102-9385667-3700932?ie=UTF8&s=photo) he wanted, grimacing a little at the price.

"That's the one."

Jane rooted around until she found a box with a picture that matched the thing Walter had pointed out and nearly fainted herself at the price.

"Christ Almighty!"

"Things are more expensive here and now," Walter said, having had his own moments of wtf? when he first arrived in Fandom. "But I read a little and this is supposed to be a good camera."

"It's so little." she said turning it in her hands. "I had my picture taken a couple of times... Where do you put the flash powder?"

"There's no flash powder, and no film," Walter explained, holding his hand out for the box. "I don't fully understand how it works, either, but it makes a little picture I can print using another machine called a computer." He thought for a second. "And a printer."

Jane has not heard of Babbage's Deference Engine, so she has no frame of reference.

"Get out." she said. "Seriously Walter, what does this thing do?"

Walter held his hand out for the box. "Here. I'll show you. Or maybe I should pay for it first, and then I'll show you."

Oooh that means she's gotta try to use this "register" thing.

"Right... Well... There's the price." she said pointing at the lable.

Walter nodded. "I had planned for that." He pulled out his wallet and enough cash to cover the cost and tax.

Oh yeah, tax... Let's see divide by this, carry the two.... Ahhh, the kid seemed sharp, he probably have that right.

"Congratulations." she said waving her hands at it. "You own this thing now."

"Thank you very much, Jane." He took the package and pulled out the camera, giving the quick start instructions a cursory lookover and eventually figuring out where the battery went.

After some more fumbling, a little bit of muttering, he had the camera started and turned it around to show Jane the display screen.

"See? You can see what you're taking a picture of here."

"Huh." she grunted looking between the screen and what the camera was looking at.

"That's like that other little box that other Limey kid had at the bar... Except the little man in it wasn't anywhere else to be seen."

Walter turned the camera around and snapped a picture of Jane, then started randomly flipping through the camera menus until he could show her the picture he'd just taken.

"I can take this camera and connect it to something called a computer and from there, I can use a third machine to print it and have pictures I can send home to people in my time."

Yes, it sounded nuts even to him.

"You just took my picture?" Jane asked. "That fast?"

"That fast." Walter thought about it and pulled out his polaroid. "I have been using this one, it prints the picture while you watch."

He turned it around and took a cockeyed photo of himself, handing her the blank photo when the camera spat it out. "Give it a minute and the picture appears."

Jane looked at the thing Walter just handed it to her.

For some reason, she felt the need to shake it... But it smelled funny and she didn't want to spread that sent around.

"You're shittin' me."

"Not at all." Walter nodded to the photo paper in her hand where a ghost image of him was appearing. "It doesn't seem fair to tease you when you're so new here. I'll do that in a few weeks."

"I'll be sure to mark my calendar." she said motioning to one with firemen and Dalmatian puppies behind the counter.

"Right then. It's a date." Walter pointed to the polaroid. "And the picture is ready."

"Well fuck me." she said holding it up to compare with him. "It's in color and everything."

"It's quite a trick," Walter agreed. "Thanks for your help."

"You're quite welcome." she said offering the picture. "S'what I'm here for."

Walter took the picture and pocketed it. He could send it home along with the picture he'd taken of Phoebe. Alucard would be amused.

Gathering his things, he headed for the door. "Good day, Jane."

"Good day to you Walter."
