Caritas - Open [8/10]

Veronica arrived at work, grateful that the temperatures had cooled off considerably from the previous week.

She checked the Zombie Band and got everything ready to open, all the while thinking about a going away gift for Weevil.

Archie dissolved into giggles, his face buried in his arms on the bar.

"Oh God," Archie choked out once he'd gotten his laughter under control. "I just wouldn't put it past you to actually do it!"

"I somehow think you were like this before you met me," Veronica said.

"Perhaps a bit," Archie conceded. "But you encourage me. In many ways, which is not a bad thing."

Veronica leaned on her elbows. "Oh really? Well, I like having a positive influence."

"You've done more good for me than anyone I can think of in the last several years," Archie replied seriously.

"Considering where I was a year ago, it's really hard for me to believe that," Veronica admitted. "Of course, you've done a lot for me, too."

"I'm not one for believing in destiny," Archie said slowly. "But sometimes it seems like too much of a coincidence how much we've been able to help each other that way."

Archie propped his chin on his hands and smiled at her. "I'm more than willing to accept that theory."

Veronica leaned forward and kissed him lightly.

Archie grinned and ran his fingertips down her cheek. "I think the zombie band is rolling its eyes at us. Hard to tell, though. They might not be doing it on purpose."

Veronica pulled away and looked at the floor to see if he meant that literally.

"I'm teasing," he told her. Well . . . he could have been. But they were zombies.

"I really do think I can get away with closing now," she said.

Archie was already wiping down the bar by this point. "I do like that you never object to my helping any more."

"Arguing was pointless," Veronica said. "Besides, it's gets us out of here faster."

She was grateful for the small crowd which meant only a few dishes.
