Empire Records and Bidet, [8/21]

Lucas sighed as he looked over the books again. He just couldn't do it. He couldn't run this store without going completely insane.

Empire could not be saved, it seemed.

He only had a few days left, so he opened the store after his workshop instead of taking the afternoon off. Might as well make the most of his last few days with his store.

Maureen realized she'd been in town for a few weeks and hadn't done much other than hook up with Christian and hang out at Caritas.

She kind of liked the town though and figured if she was going to give it a real shot at starting over she should get a job and maybe a place of her own.

Remembering that the record store guy... Lyle? Larry? something with an L... had offered her a job, she decided to stop by and see if he still had an opening.

"Hey," she greeted with a grin.

"Hi," Lucas replied. "Maureen, wasn't it?"

"Yes," she grinned. "And you're... L... Luke?"

"Close enough. Lucas. Nice to see you again. Can I help you with anything?"

"Sorry," Maureen gave him a charming smile. "Actually, you might be able to. A few weeks ago when I stopped in, you said you had a job opening. Do you still?"

Lucas nodded quickly. "Yes. Yes I do. I'm looking for a manager."

"A manager?" Maureen asked. She had absolutely no management skills, but how hard could it be to run a record store? "I could do that."

"Excellent. You can start as soon as you can, pick your own hours, whatever you want. No firing the people who are already working here without handwavily letting me know first, but other than that, you're rule free."

Lucas relaxed and smiled, then paused. "Oh, watch out for students using the record store for unorthodox purposes."

Maureen grinned. "Great! Do I need to do any paperwork or anything?"

She assumed that by 'unorthodox purposes' Lucas meant sneaking in after hours for parties or something.

If asked, Lucas would point out that having sex or wild parties in a record store was practically a rite of passage for today's youth.

But he wasn't.

"I've got some W-2s around her somewhere, but that should be all you need."

"Fantastic," Maureen said. "So where will you be?"

"New Jersey. I'm afraid a friend of mine is sort of . . . imploding, and I'm going to need to look out for her."

"I'm sorry to hear that," Maureen said with genuine sympathy. "When should I come in for training?"

"Does tomorrow work for you?"
